He’s out. Kingston Hawthorn has been left deeply disappointed at the defection of young fast bowler Tyler Pearson to rival Premier club Camberwell Magpies. The Magpies announced yesterday that they had secured the state squad member despite the Hawks’ efforts to keep him. “He played with a number of players at our club … those boys have conversations and it’s developed from there,” Camberwell Magpies coach David Alleyne said today.

Most VFL clubs are satisfied signing one ruckman in the off-season. Williamstown has signed three. Needing to replace their club champion Tom Downie, the Towners secured former AFL big man Braydon Preuss. They then brought in young Queenslander Marcus Zipf, who has already caught the attention of a few AFL clubs. Now Willy have picked up more tall timber: 211cm former Carlton rookie Alex Mirkov.

Dylan Brasher to make Shield debut for Victoria

Stylish left-hander Dylan Brasher has been knocking at the door of the Victorian selectors for a while. They have answered it, granting the Footscray batsman a Sheffield Shield debut. Brasher, in his third season with the Victorian squad, will play against Queensland at the MCG match starting this Thursday. The 25-year-old tops the Victorian Premier Cricket run chart with 794 runs at an average of 61.08, with centuries against Kingston Hawthorn, Melbourne University and Greenvale Kangaroos.
