Far from the eyes, close to the heart. Today is September 19th, 2022, 11:53 AM. I'm sat on a train somewhere in Europe watching the windmills go by. My blue toenails peak out from my sandles, contrasting the pink blisters gained from new Italian shoes. To my right is a single piece of luggage I bought from Costco when I was young. That suitcase has probably seen me around the world more than any one person... am I in a monogamous relationship with a piece of luggage? Inside lies everything I own.

Wade Davis has a lot of nerve being cheerful. Someone who can list as many threats to the world’s future as he does should be a tormented wreck. Humanity’s soaring population, eco-degradation, the rapid loss of the world’s languages — these are not exactly things that make Davis’s heart soar. But Davis brings a New Year message of hope for people who despair about the world’s chance of surviving.
