Paul Leonard-Morgan • PRETTY LETHAL
Director Vicky Jewson’s new film, Pretty Lethal, is an action-packed thriller where five ballerinas, on their way to a prestigious dance competition, are barely on speaking terms when their bus breaks down in a remote forest. With no other options, they reluctantly seek shelter at an unsettling roadside inn run by Devora Kasimer (Uma Thurman), a reclusive former ballet prodigy. From the moment they arrive, something feels wrong—and their worst instincts prove right.
CRIMSON DESERT - STARBURST Magazine
PLATFORM: PC, PS5, XBOX SERIES (REVIEWED) | RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW Oh boy, this is going to be a tricky one! Crimson Desert, from Korean developer Pearl Abyss, started life as a follow-up to the beloved MMO Black Desert Online, before plans changed and the game turned into a massive (like, really massive) single-player RPG.
Daniel Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei • FACES OF DEATH
The 1978 mondo horror Faces of Death presented the viewer with various ways people can die – including shocking real-life footage. It’s the inspiration for a new movie of the same name, in which an online moderator (Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira) comes across a group re-enacting the original film’s murders.
DAUGHTER OF CROWS
What would you get if you crossed Greek myths with Gideon the Ninth and tossed in an expert assassin who happens to be an OAP? The answer is the latest series starter from grimdark fantasy maestro Mark Lawrence, which broadly operates in the dark academia genre (only with a serious emphasis on the dark).
WWE 2K26 - STARBURST Magazine
PLATFORM: PC, PS5, SWITCH 2, XBOX SERIES (REVIEWED) | RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW The WWE 2K series has been on a pretty good run over the last few years. Since a bit of a mis-step in 2020 (and a year off in 2021), developer Visual Concepts returned with a vastly improved instalment in 2022 and has continued to build on those foundations with each passing year.
Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information
PLATFORM: PC, PS5, SWITCH, XBOX SERIES (REVIEWED) | RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW More than twenty years years since we last saw Kain and his goth mates from the dark fantasy Legacy of Kain games (if you don’t include the recent remasters, that is), the series has been resurrected for a brand new instalment. Ascendance moves away from its predecessors’ 3D formula, instead taking the form of a side-scrolling 2D action platformer with both feet firmly planted on the “retro inspired” side of the room.
Jordan Gavaris • TOUCH ME
In writer/director Addison Heimann’s new movie, Touch Me, “Two codependent best friends become addicted to the heroin-like touch of an alien narcissist who may or may not be trying to take over the world.” Starring Olivia Taylor Dudley, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Jordan Gavaris, along with Marlene Forte and Paget Brewster, this new movie is sticky and weird and horned-up in a way which feels like a monster movie dropped into the world of a ’90s erotic thriller.
SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY (1971)
Jess Franco’s follow-up to the hypnotic Vampyros Lesbos carries over many of the cast and the director’s singular style. Following the death of her controversial scientist husband, Soledad Miranda’s character becomes an avenging angel of death, seeking out those who persecuted him and hounded him to commit suicide.
FACES OF DEATH - STARBURST Magazine
When the original Faces of Death came out in 1978, the world was convinced that this shockumentary was real, when in reality it was predominantly fake. Today, we live in a world where social media algorithms consume our lives, AI is readily available, and everyone is trying to be the main attraction.
SCREAMBOAT - STARBURST Magazine
Watch out, there’s a pint-sized tooney terror aboard and he’s taking no prisoners! Screamboat serves up an abundance of blood and guts that will leave you seasick, and the Disney puns will have your eyes rolling! With Steamboat Willie entering the public domain, this twist to the classic animation sticks to the bare bones of the original subject matter closely, but adds some fresh ideas to the mix, throwing the source material into the dark underbelly of horror.
DRAGONKIN: THE BANISHED
PLATFORM: PC, PS5, XBOX SERIES (REVIEWED) | RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW Closely following the familiar action RPG formula, Dragonkin asks players to save the world by stepping into the shoes of one of four classes – a knight (tank), barbarian (brawler), oracle (mage) or tracker (ranged) – and fighting through a roughly 12-hour campaign. An isometric looter along the same lines as Diablo, Torchlight 2 and Path of Exile, Dragonkin differentiates itself from its peers with its levelling system.
MAKE TIME FOR TIMESLIP
Running for one 26-episode series between 1970/1971, Timeslip remains one of the most fondly-remembered and influential British TV children’s serials of all time. The series starred Spencer Banks as Simon Randall and Cheryl Burfield as Liz Skinner, two youngsters who find themselves able to access ‘time bubbles’ that allow them to pass through a ‘time barrier’ located in the grounds of a long-abandoned wartime military installation.
K.A. Linde • HOUSE OF SHADOWS - STARBURST Magazine
K.A. Linde is the number one Sunday Times bestselling author of The Oak and Holly Cycle. Their new series, The Royal Houses, launched to an excited fan base and is currently grabbing the attentions of fantasy fans all over the world. We caught up with them to find out more. How would you pitch House of Dragons and House of Shadows to someone who was a fan of Dungeons and Dragons? For anyone who enjoys Dungeons and Dragons, my Royal Houses series would be a fun adventure.
William Shick • ATOMIC MASS GAMES
William Shick is VP of Creative Development & Strategy for Atomic Mass Games What are your favourite Marvel and Star Wars moments? Starting off with the impossible questions! My favorite Star Wars moment is the Death Star battle over Yavin 4 from A New Hope. I loved that part so much I eventually wore out the VHS tape from so many repeated viewings. For Marvel, it’s a lot tougher purely because there are so many different pieces of media all with their own great moments.
The Mummy 4 Is Officially Moving Ahead with a Release Date Set for 2028
After a long hiatus from Hollywood, one of the industry’s most beloved actors is back in action. Brendan Fraser hasn’t been in any blockbusters for years, but now he’s set to return to the franchise that helped make him a household name. There have been rumours about a Mummy 4 release with Fraser back in the starring role for some time, and now it has officially been confirmed. The next picture is set for release in 2028 and will hopefully lead to other spin-offs featuring Fraser.
BARE SKIN - STARBURST Magazine
This portmanteau thriller centres on an intensive therapy session for a group of traumatised survivors of disturbing physical and psychological torment. Brought together in a collective exercise to ‘share and heal’, these distrustful and damaged individuals are encouraged by their therapist to recount their experiences in the ‘safe space’ that she has enabled for them all. As befits the format, each of these five combative survivors is invited to tell their personal horror story.
SURRENDER TO IT - STARBURST Magazine
A group of former students from a drama school are all invited to a reunion weekend, deep in the Welsh countryside. As a gang of local hoodlums makes it clear that the visitors are unwelcome, the real motivation behind the invitation is gradually revealed. What follows is a rollercoaster of chases, chance encounters, lost opportunities, confrontations and strange goings-on in the woods – ending when an already bad trip is made worse by the experience of an additional mushroom-fuelled ‘bad trip’.
VAMPRYOS LESBOS (1971)
Prolific cult director Jess Franco returns to the world of Dracula with this gorgeous, surreal masterpiece. Soledad Miranda is the focus of the film, playing Countess Nadine Carody, who’s set to inherit Dracula’s estate. Many of the story’s traditional roles are flipped, with Jonathan Harker’s role taken by Ewa Strömberg’s Linda Westinghouse. However, rather than trapping Linda in her castle, the Countess opens Linda’s sexual world with various sins of the flesh.
Emily Carding • BRIDGE COMMAND
Emily Carding is an actor, theatre-maker, writer and artist. They are best known for their award-winning interactive solo Shakespeare shows, as well as the role of Dara 2026’s Return to Silent Hill. Their award winning work immersive experiences such as The Key of Dreams and, of course, Bridge Command, where they play the dour and disciplined Captain Athena Hamilton. We caught up with them to find out more. How did you end up working for Bridge Command?
PULL TO OPEN: 1962-1963: THE INSIDE STORY OF HOW THE BBC CREATED AND LAUNCHED DOCTOR WHO
by Paul Mount In 1972, Piccolo Books (an imprint of Pan Books in the UK) issued a slim paperback volume (just over 100 pages) entitled The Making of Doctor Who, co-written by scriptwriter Malcolm Hulke and series script editor Terrance Dicks. The book was an extraordinary gateway back to what felt like a dim and distant past (bearing in mind that the show was yet to reach its tenth anniversary) and was the first book to consider the history of the programme and how it came to the screen.
UNQUIET - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount Lovers of slow-paced, measured Gothic mysteries will be the most appreciative audience for E Saxey’s Unquiet. This is an absorbing and occasionally demanding novel that will transport readers back to a world of creaking Victorian-era townhouses, buttoned-up familial relationships and forbidden, simmering passions laced with a vague hint of the other-worldly.
BLUE BEETLE - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount As the DCEU stumbles shame-facedly towards the door marked ‘James Gunn reboot’, it can at least briefly raise its head in acknowledgement of the fact that, in the wake of a series of underperforming and creatively wanting superhero blockbusters, it’s finally delivered something significantly more assured even if its Box Office prospects are no better than its less-than-illustrious predecessors.
DOCTOR WHO - THE WATERS OF MARS
by Paul Mount David Tennant’s first tenure as the Doctor raced breathlessly to its finish line in a series of ‘special’ episodes aired intermittently during 2009. They were a bit of a mixed bunch, to be honest – Easter’s Planet of the Dead was a heady, if vacuous, romp and the actual two-part finale, The End of Time, airing over the Festive period, suggested that showrunner Russell T Davies was starting to run out of creative steam.
THE WENDIGO - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount Just when you thought it was safe to go back to watching straight-to-streaming (or DVD if you’re so inclined) genre movies, the grim spectre of the found footage film, hugely popular a few years ago, starts to raise its grisly head again. In truth, it’s a subgenre that’s never really gone away, and it can be a useful tool to allow nascent filmmakers without a lot of cash to flash the chance to get something on screen.
BIRD BOX BARCELONA
by Paul Mount This belated sequel to 2018’s Sandra Bullock-starring Bird Box – the first proper sit-up-and-take-notice feature film smash hit of the streaming age – is surprisingly accomplished, even if it’s unlikely to repeat the success of its predecessor.
A KIND OF KIDNAPPING
by Paul Mount He’s best known for his stand-up comedy and as a writer/actor (the cult BBC3 sitcom How Not To Live Your Life), but Dan Clarke’s first feature film as writer and director is a brittle, sharply-observed post-Brexit comedy thriller that could really only exist right now. The film reflects the grim reality of a Britain that seems to have lost its way and left its population with no choice but to make its own choices just to keep its head above water in a world that wants it to drown.
THEY LURK - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount He may not yet be a household horror name like Stephen King but it’s easy to see why Ronald Malfi is acclaimed as “one of the all-time great horror writers” on the cover of They Lurk, this new collection of four of his early novellas and one brand new piece that, in all honesty, has got feature film written right through it.
THE AMAZING WORLD OF DOCTOR WHO
by Paul Mount Over the decades, Doctor Who fans have demonstrated the most remarkable capacity for embracing and devouring the most peculiar, arcane pieces of merchandise. This admittedly-impressive new vinyl package from Demon Records is absolutely a case in point. In 1976 publishers World Distributors, responsible for the official Doctor Who Annuals since 1964, published a special slim hardback book to coincide with a Typhoo Tea picture card promotion.
SUBORBITAL 7 - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount For the first eighty or so pages, John Shirley’s Suborbital 7 reads worryingly like a novelisation of one of those ropey 1980s straight-to-DVD action thrillers (usually starring Steven Segal or Dolph Lundgren) with titles like Ultimate Power or Hostile Vengeance or Hard Bastard Mission 3.
MARTIN (1977) - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount Even if he had only directed Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero would have secured a deserved place at the top table of any gathering of filmmakers pivotal in the development of the horror genre. But there’s more to Romero’s oeuvre than his infamous tale of hideous, flesh-hungry ghouls rising up against Mankind (and its numerous sequels). Romero himself often stated that 1977’s underrated and underappreciated Martin was his favourite of all his films. It’s not hard to see why.
CREEPING HORROR - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount Creeping Horror is Eureka Entertainment’s latest deep Blu-ray dive into the darkest corners of the Universal Pictures vault.
GHOSTED - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount Dexter Fletcher directs this likeable, action-packed rom-com/thriller starring Chris Evans as an unwilling accomplice to the globetrotting exploits of an undercover agent played by the vivacious Ana de Armas. Cole Turner (Evans) meets up with Sadie Rhodes (de Armas) at a farmer’s market. He’s perplexed when, after a (very) successful first date, she doesn’t seem keen to acknowledge his texts or return his calls.
THE LAST SENTINEL
by Paul Mount It’s 2063, and the world has been devastated by environmental abuse and an ongoing war between two rival power blocs. On a remote rig out at sea, a crew of four are keeping a watchful eye on the watery world around them whilst trying to communicate with the wider world (without success) and to keep their own sanity on what is becoming an endless tour of duty. A massive tidal wave smashes into the rig, their food supplies dwindle, and their spirits sink even lower.
TETRIS - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount When rumours surfaced of a forthcoming feature film based on Tetris, the popular puzzle video game created in 1984 by Russian software engineer Alexey Pajitnov, the mind boggled at the prospect of a two-hour movie in which various lines of square boxes tumble slowly from the top of the screen to the bottom.
BLAKE'S 7 ORIGINS - STARBURST Magazine
by Paul Mount Although it only ran for 52 episodes across four seasons from 1978 to 1981, Terry Nation’s BBC space opera Blake’s 7 has developed a ferociously loyal and determined following since its demise, following the lead, perhaps, of its titular character Roj Blake (played by sturdy Gareth Thomas).
DOCTOR WHO THE COLLECTION - SEASON NINE
By Paul Mount It’s 1972, and Doctor Who is cooking on gas. Three years on from its first cancellation crisis in 1969, the show, given a last chance to justify itself following tumbling ratings towards the end of Second Doctor Patrick Troughton’s era and with no viable replacement option having presented itself, had triumphantly reinvented itself for the bright new age of colour television.
SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS
by Paul Mount 2019’s family-friendly Shazam! is often regarded as one of the better efforts generated by the messy, uneven DC Extended Universe.
CURSED FILMS - SEASON ONE
by Paul Mount Horror films are more popular than ever – the Scream and Halloween franchises refuse to die and newcomers like M3GAN, Smile, and Barbarian are raking in massive box office profits from minuscule budgets.
The Daily Sentinel

Phillip Stewart officiating. Burial followed in Union Cemetery. kAm|C] |@F?E :D DFCG:G65 3J 52F89E6CD[ %C:?2 |@F?E y@9?D@? @7 $4@EED3@C@ 2?5 %2?J2 |@F?E !C@4E@C @7 $4@EED3@C@j 8C2?552F89E6C[ qC:62??6 y@9?D@?j 8C2?5D@?D[ q=2<6 Wv=6?52X y@9?D@?
Jason Flemyng | EAT LOCALS
Across his twenty-five year career as a film and television actor, Jason Flemyng has appeared in literally hundreds of productions including the likes of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Jekyll and Hyde in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Azazel in X-Men: First Class - and a stint as the lead in ITV’s dinosaur drama Primeval.
Phillip Escott & Craig Newman | CRUEL SUMMER
is a harrowing, troubling real-world story of lies, jealousy, revenge and dreadful, sickening violence. Filmed in and around Cardiff in August 2015 the film is the tale of a young autistic boy named Danny (Richard Pawulski) whose overnight camping adventure, part of his Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, turns into a terrifying nightmare when he becomes the target of a campaign of hate led by the furious, enraged Nicholas (Emmerdale star Danny Miller).
Forthcoming Attraction - NIGHT OF THE TRAMPIRES
In a 23,000 square foot converted warehouse studio facility on the somewhat unlikely location of a trading estate just outside Bridgend in South Wales, distinguishable from similar buildings all around purely by virtual of a sign marked ‘Animortal’ above the door, a little bit of movie magic - if not movie madness - is being made.
