“Mice,” by Paul Muldoon
1 You may take my word for their being very nearly as hard to herd as people. Whereas the curlew may “wheep” or “wheeple” depending on the stretch of salt marsh or other harsh terrain from which it happens to hail, a mouse will whisper-wail a single ultrasonic note that resonates through the chthonic zones beloved of Hecate. A mouse will blithely throw down this ultrasonic “hey for houghmagandie” to attract the doe some still take for eye candy.

Pentimenti | Paul Muldoon
It was Jan van Eyck who first sent a ripple through greater Bruges by banishing both streak and stipple in a truly historic moment that saw him painting “fat on lean” and leaving no trace of a brush stroke on either a girl’s sleek loin or the streamlined carcass of a bowhead whale. The process of scouring lanolin from sheep’s wool may still be seen as an attempt to wrest meaning from the meaningless.

Poem Of The Week: Silk Shirtwaisters From Paris By Janice Warman
arts Silk shirtwaisters from Paris Clearing clogged cupboards and cluttered shelves, among cracked compacts and drawers stuffed with wads of cotton-wool, we found bright silk shirtwaisters from Paris, a heavy gold chain, a rope of fat, dark amber beads, mother-of-pearl opera glasses, an etched scarab in its polished wooden box, and a slim notebook that held a single line: Alzheimer’s is an inflammatory disease.
All That Is Unspoken: In A Quiet Land By Sean Body
arts The final story of Sean Body’s recent collection almost yields, in precis, a unitary definition of his preoccupations. For the stories presented in the generically entitled In a Quiet Land, although hermetically sealed for distinction, all bear thematic tropes recognisable in each.
Poem Of The Week: The Day Room (I) By Kit Wright
arts The Day Room (I) From Kendal Ward, Rainhill Mental Hospital Many are non-plussed By the unexpected behaviour of their clothes And have mislaid forever The art of wearing the face. Gums wedged tight or mouths Locked open in a scream that travels inward Homelessly: Here we all are on your holy mountain. It’s a little bit nippy up here on the mountain For some are shivering, never Stop shivering, also Unseasonably warm. That man Is caked with lava, head to hip.
Visionary Gleam: The Lake Poets - An Anthology
arts There is a neat symmetry to the presence of James Rebanks in an anthology of the work of the Lake poets, as though a decontextualised, and profoundly articulate, version of ‘Michael’ were repaying, in eloquence, the faith of Wordsworth in the sheep farmer’s natural integrity. For Rebanks and Michael share an affinity for the landscape, its disposition and sympathetic management, that amounts, almost, to a symbiosis.
Poem Of The Week: The Sick Rose by William Blake (1757-1827)
arts The Sick Rose O rose, thou art sick! The invisible worm That flies in the night, In the howling storm, Has found out thy bed Of crimson joy, And his dark secret love Does thy life destroy. William Blake’s fine poem of corrupted innocence would be serviceable in any context or setting: crushing experience, like the malevolent worm whose trajectory seems inexorable, undermines the pristine fabric of hope in two short quatrains, laying waste utterly.
Poem Of The Week: Why Brownlee Left By Paul Muldoon
arts Why Brownlee Left Why Brownlee left, and where he went, Is a mystery even now. For if a man should have been content It was him; two acres of barley, One of potatoes, four bullocks, A milker, a slated farmhouse. He was last seen going out to plough On a March morning, bright and early. By noon Brownlee was famous; They had found all abandoned, with The last rig unbroken, his pair of black Horses, like man and wife, Shifting their weight from foot to Foot, and gazing into the future.

Find and share the perfect poems. The super worked all day as a conductor on the subway and in the evenings as a dominatrix. She lived above me. I heard a mix of pain and pleasure—impossible to tell the difference in that studio full of my own silence. On the front stoop I ran into her clients, who drooped in exhausted gratitude. Once, I knocked. When she cracked the door I could see she’d been crying. Behind her, a TV blued the room; something was frying on the stove. I had a small concern.

The Yale Review | Paul Muldoon: “Ms. Julie Jones”
How did this poem begin for you? Strictly speaking, this is a found poem. Perhaps even a foundling poem, in the sense it left successive versions of itself on my doorstep. Two years after we moved to our present address in lower Manhattan, we’re still getting items of mail intended for the previous owner. Together they give a clear sense of her personality, her political persuasion, her preferences in leisure pursuits.

“The Belfast Pogrom: Some Observations,” a Poem by Paul Muldoon
“The Belfast Pogrom: Some Observations” Article continues after advertisement The shipyard workers are no lighter on their feet than the linen workers who flock to Ross’s Mill on Odessa Street to wrangle a bedsheet out of sullen flax. The shipyard workers are no lighter on their feet than this newly launched ship of the fleet laying about it with its fluke. The linen workers on Odessa Street look to his nosebag for the mummy wheat that may raise a horse-king from his cart-catafalque.
His Poems Are a Joy to Hear, Even When Their Meanings Aren't Clear Original
JOY IN SERVICE ON RUE TAGORE, by Paul Muldoon A few weeks after my editor assigned me this review, I came close to sending him a panicked email. "I can't pretend to have any idea what Paul Muldoon is talking about," I wanted to say.
Poem by Paul Muldoon
Even as we speak, there's a smoker's cough from behind the whitethorn hedge: we stop dead in our tracks; a distant tingle of water into a trough. In the past half-hour—since a cattle truck all but sent us shuffling off this mortal coil— we've consoled ourselves with the dregs of a bottle of Redbreast.
The Grand Conversation
She. My people came from Korelitz where they grew yellow cucumbers and studied the Talmud. He. Mine pored over the mud of mangold- and potato-pits or flicked through kale plants from Comber as bibliomancers of old went a-flicking through deckle-mold. She. Mine would lie low in the shtetl when they heard the distant thunder stolen by the Cossacks. He. It was potato sacks lumped together on a settle mine found themselves lying under, the Peep O'Day Boys from Loughgall making Defenders of us all. She.

March 2024, no. 462
The March issue of ABR opens with a volley of letters following Kevin Foster’s lively review of David McBride’s memoirs in the previous issue. The cover feature is a major essay from pioneering gay rights scholar Dennis Altman on being gay, eighty and a secular Australian Jew at a time of great violence and tension in the Middle East. Patrick Mullins wrestles with two books on Robert Menzies, and Clinton Fernandes shows why the European Union is founded on white myth.

20230922 The Road to Seville – The crazy idea, fruition and Job done 100 K raised. - Mouldy 67
The Road to Seville Cycle, where did it begin and who was crazy enough to come up with this ? The seed was planted at around 09.00 am hrs on Saturday 30th March 2019, when three bampots from the Road to Lisbon got together for a coffee in Ayr Town Centre. It was coffee! The meeting was to help hydrate ahead of meeting up with some other cycling pals and a young Celtic Cyclist “Malo” from Brittany who had been cycling from Brittany via the Celtic regions to Paradise.
20230915 Rehabilitation progress, Celtic Family, Phil
Looking back over the last week we can share progress, new blog launched thanks to the support from Willie and the team at Horgabost Media Services thanks. We went down memory lane of some previous crazy cycles and charity projects which anniversary dates. Writing some of the blogs was fun even of one or two of them where a bit wordy and I might be at the risk of a receptive strain injury lol.
20230912 A Wander around Paradise, Solving Kids Cancer, Tommy
Firstly, due to some tightness/tension decided to park the early morning rehab session, however assuming all ok we will cover later this evening as we are keen to achieve four in a row of the 60-minute sessions. Yesterday evening we had spoken about the Celtic family and the support to promote projects over the years. Just last week we had been lucky team meet up with John Paul Dykes from A Celtic State of Mind, where a “Wander around Paradise” was achieved.
20230911 The Celtic Family & why ?
Firstly, to give an update on progress on the new programme, I was able to make a 60-minute cycle for third day in a row & hope to extend this over the next couple of days. This I am delighted with given where we started on 2023/07/30 only being permitted to do 10-minute sessions before resting, waiting, and checking for reactions.
20230909 Mouldy’s blog – Wee Oscar - Mouldy 67
For several months because of the chronic injuries and nerve pain I would describe my sleeping pattern to be erratic at best. Walking up this morning at around 04.00 am and still being awake close to two hours later was not unusual from recent experience. When you are awake and struggling to get back to sleep your mind starts to process various aspects.
“The MRI,” by Paul Muldoon
Again and again, we’ll put our shoulder to the wheel on which we’re broken. Stretched out at the heart of a replica of the stone sarcophagus we once believed to “eat flesh,” we still have a straight shot at the Strait of Gibraltar. Where we first found a shoulder to cry on. Long before the flash of an iron-rimmed wheel on a limestone pavement. Where we first had a little heart to heart. Where we first developed our sense of the straight and narrow. Threw the first stone.
Welcome to the Irish Alps
In memory of Charles Simic That the Gallic tribes were the ‘people of the hills’ (sharing an Indo-European root with collis), is an idea wherein their heirs in the Eastern Catskills still find a smidgin of solace. That the Gauls were the ‘people of the milky skin’ from a galaxy far, far away that supplied Greece with boatloads of tin is another concept that holds sway.
“A Graveyard in New England”
Although we’ve spent so much time clearing fields it seems a plow does little more than scratch the surface of the land we’d hoped would yield one hundred pumpkins from the pumpkin patch and represent a hundredfold increase. Although we’ve spent so much time clearing fields and taken out quite a long lease on this hacked rim of the Canadian Shield only recently has it been revealed it’s not just in our beds lovers must bundle.

Paul McCartney The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present by Paul McCartney (Author), Paul Muldoon (Editor) I’ve been listening to Paul McCartney’s solo work for over 50 years. Paul made it very clear he had no plans to write with John Lennon or work with The Beatles again..

After a set by Shadows look alikes The Rapiers, on walked Robert with a completely new band. He proceeded to weave a rich tapestry of both old and new in a quite astonishing performance.

poetry Nov. 11, 2021, 3:55 p.m. ET HOWDIE-SKELP By Paul Muldoon 179 pp. Farrar, Straus & Giroux. $27. “Howdie-skelp”: the slap a midwife gives a newborn. Poem-sequences dominate Muldoon’s storm of slaps against piety, prudery, cruelty and greed. “American Standard,” named after a toilet brand, riffs for pages on lines from T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” while churning through contemporary concerns like gerrymandering, immigration, and grotesque politicians and their media platforms.

The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present
Pre-Order Ships 2 November 2021 Description 'More often than I can count, I've been asked if I would write an autobiography, but the time has never been right. The one thing I've always managed to do, whether at home or on the road, is to write new songs. I know that some people, when they get to a certain age, like to go to a diary to recall day-to-day events from the past, but I have no such notebooks. What I do have are my songs, hundreds of them, which I've learned serve much the same purpose.
