One man’s apartment-hunting journey There’s a lot of talk in our politics about how rents are unaffordable. We see historically low vacancy rates and record asking rents flash across our screens. But it wasn’t until I had to find a new place to live that the problem literally hit home for me. When I moved to New York City in 2017 to pursue my PhD, I remember being pleasantly surprised by the cost of rent.

What do we know about crime on New York City's subway system? A lot and a little. A lot, in that crimes that happen there tend to be covered intensely in the media — especially pushings and homicides, including notorious incidents such as the arson homicide at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station late last year.

Simply stated, gun-free zones are places where firearms are not allowed. Likely the most well-known of these are gun-free school zones, which typically prohibit the possession of firearms within 1,000 feet of a school’s grounds, be they public or private schools. However, gun-free zones can be and are established by states and localities in many different ways and with varying levels of enforcement.
