I nearly died from tuberculosis - and why world must do more to tackle it
Paul Thorn nearly died from a tuberculosis outbreak on a hospital ward (Photo: Chris Giles Photography) I’ve been HIV-positive since 1988, and I was 17 years old when I was infected. In 1995, as I was becoming ill with an AIDS-related illness, I was infected with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). If you read between the lines of my new book you will see that I’m more than a virus or disease. I’m a human being, full of hopes and dreams and prone to fear like everyone else.

HIV Positive? Why you owe it to yourself to be HIV Happy
Paul Thorn: 'Happiness comes from being grateful for what we have already in our lives' (Photo: supplied) I believe that it’s possible for someone to co-exist with HIV, when on treatment, and to be happy in their own skin and satisfied with life. When the First Edition of my book, HIV Happy, came out in 2015 there was some head scratching among the HIV community. People who had never read the book made assumptions on what it was all about.
Growing old with HIV: how to cope with ageing and those grey hairs you never thought you would have!
This article has been written as part of the My HIV, My Rules, My Journey campaign, a disease awareness programme that has been developed and paid for by Gilead Sciences Ltd. Time is the great equaliser. We are all subject to it whomever you are; however popular, talented, toned or gorgeous – whether you are HIV-positive or not. Ageing is a natural process and we have no choice but to accept it, no matter how many grey hairs we dye. How we choose to deal with it is the key.
School toilets: Guidance and regulations
Paul Thorn offers us his guide to regulations and best practice when it comes to your school toilet facilities When designing toilet facilities for educational institutions, getting your head around the rules and regulations can be a minefield of contradictory information, with several inconsistencies between different versions of governmental guidance. Confusion arises from the dissolution of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in 2007.
HIV Happy: Review
The AIDS pandemic is only one year shy of turning thirty-five. During all this time, we’ve read many, many stories inspired by the virus that started the pandemic, and also by those living with the virus. Stories often capture a wide range of emotions associated with HIV and AIDS—from suffering and loss, to success and victories against the virus—sketching out in a seemingly infinite of ways, the ongoing epidemic and the ever-changing face of the disease itself.

Safety showers, eyewash stations and the ANSI Regulations

Here, Paul Thorn, the MD of Safety-Eyewash.co.uk, will take a look at different kinds of safety equipment, and the set of guidelines that governs their use: ANSI Z358.1. The two essential types of emergency decontamination equipment are eyewash stations and drench showers.
Wudu washing: is your college catering to its Islamic students?
Islam is the second largest religion in the UK, with Muslim people making up around 5% of the total population. For that reason, it’s important to make sure that students who follow Islam are provided with the facilities they need to practice their faith - but all too often, colleges are failing to meet these requirements. The purification ritual of Wudu is an important aspect of Islam, but most colleges lack the basic facilities that enable Muslims to carry it out.
Your New Relationship Could Be In Danger If Your Imagination Runs Riot
Like a movie that exists only in our own mind, we imagine our life with this person. Once in a while we may meet someone special and the door to our heart opens. Our mind can take us on a journey, and we potentially slip into ‘future fiction’ – you know, where you’ve mentally merged your DVD collection, and the removal van is at the door, even though it’s only the second date. We’ve suddenly mentally leaped months or years ahead of ourselves. “Choosing bedroom curtains”, as I call it.
Is there such thing as a fairy tale romance?
Paul Thorn, the author of The Broken Heart Toolkit, asks if there’s such thing as a fairy tale romance? 26 February 2020 It has to be said that we grow up with a pretty distorted view of what love is. We hear people sing songs (amongst other things) of how they will climb mountains, do anything for love, or walk 10,000 miles for the one they love. Very nice! But look at it another way, no-one sings about picking up their partner’s dirty socks off of the bedroom floor for decades.
How can you mend a broken heart more quickly?
Pixabay | Public DomainCan you speed up the process of getting over a broken heart?I read somewhere recently that on average we’ll have our heart broken twice in our lifetimes.I’m not sure who came up with that so-called ‘statistic’ and the word ‘broken’ should probably be used very loosely when it comes to the matters of the heart.Certainly my own experience as a gay man is that I’ve met a lot of people, kind of fell for some of them (for a short time) and even loved a few.I must be an...
