Introduction Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) can be defined as (variable) dysfunction of the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis present at birth, resulting in insufficient thyroid hormone (TH) production and, with that, severe-to-mild TH deficiency. CH may be caused by abnormal development or function of the thyroid gland, or of the hypothalamus and pituitary, but also to impaired TH action.
