Winter Storm Hernando: The Retail Surge is Happening Right Now
The pre-storm surge is happening … now! Winter Storm Hernando hits the Northeast tomorrow (Sunday) with 12-18”+ of snow expected through Monday. The retail impact isn’t tomorrow when the snow falls — it’s today, in the 24-hour window before conditions worsen. Winter Storm Fern (late January) gives us the playbook. Placer.ai tracked traffic patterns in the 48 hours before Fern hit, and the numbers show how compressed storm-driven demand actually is.
The myths that make SMS phishing (smishing) scams more dangerous
This article is about phishing scams and why most advice is making the problem worse for everyone. Every year since 2016 has been recorded as the worst year on record for phishing. It isn't new, it isn't evolving, and it isn't getting more sophisticated. The technique has been the same for over a decade.
Why AI Alone Can’t Protect Us From Phishing
Airtel just announced a new AI-based SMS fraud system that “will automatically detect and block access to flagged or suspicious websites.” But, trying to stop SMS fraud by relying on flagged links is like marking landmines after someone has stepped on them. You can read about it here. Here’s the problem. If a website hasn’t been flagged yet and doesn’t look suspicious, the system lets it through. That’s true for every security product today, with or without AI.
Why Entrepreneurs Think and Communicate Differently, and Why That Matters
I want to share this because I think it’s important for investors, corporate executives and anyone working with entrepreneurs to understand the real gap that exists in how we communicate🗣️ and think 💭. This post is my attempt to explain why some of us tell stories in ways that don’t fit the standard pitch deck, and why that difference isn’t a weakness but often our greatest strength.
Why Ireland’s New “Scam Likely” Labels Might Actually Make SMS Fraud Worse for Banks and the Public
If you work in telecoms, banking, retail, government or the media, I urge you to rethink how you talk about SMS fraud. The way we educate the public right now is making the problem worse, not better. We need to stop pushing half-truths that create false confidence and start explaining how SMS scams really work. This article is a call to change the entire approach, to help people see the real risks and make better decisions before it’s too late.
The Lie We’ve Been Sold: Why Security Has Never Stopped Phishing - and Won’t Start with SMS
In the 1990s, I worked at AOL during the early days of the internet, when phishing first emerged in chat rooms, email, and instant messages. I didn’t just witness it — I lived it. I was among the first people ever impersonated by a hacker. It began with a simple message pretending to be real, and people fell for it. 💾 Three decades later, not much has changed.
Google’s AI “Scam Detection” for Android: Why It Fails to Protect SMS, RCS, and iMessage
Paul Walsh · Follow 6 min read · -- Google’s recently announced AI-powered scam detection feature for Android has generated buzz, suggesting a big leap forward in safeguarding Android users and their mobile communications. However, beneath the headlines lies a stark truth: AI cannot stop phishing attacks that leverage brand-new links or domains with no prior history. By design, AI depends on patterns extracted from historical data.

The Critical Role of Entry Points and Why the Industry Must Do Better
A random silly image conceived by Paul Walsh, designed by ChatGPT DALLE 3 In today's cybersecurity landscape, the stakes have never been higher. The complex machinery of malware keeps evolving, while the entry point remains the same. A case in point is F5's recent deep dive into Android malware, a comprehensive analysis filled with valuable insights. But like much of the research in this space, it overlooks an essential element - the entry point.
Building GPT from the Ground Up
In the realm of artificial intelligence, the advent of large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 has been nothing short of revolutionary. While the achievements of these massive models are undeniable, the narrative often overshadows the potential of smaller-scale efforts. So can smaller teams or individuals, without the vast resources of AI giants, create LLMs from scratch?
Why Sender ID Checking Fails to Stop SMS Phishing Attacks
Some people believe that it's possible to stop SMS phishing campaigns and targeted SMS phishing attacks on companies and government agencies by verifying the identity of individuals and companies who send SMS messages. For the vast majority (99.9%) of my network who may not have in-depth knowledge about SMS infrastructure and the immense revenue streams generated from SMS traffic, let me shed some light.
Why MetaCert is issuing and listing the MCT Token with CoDEX
For the past few years, MetaCert has been working very closely with the team behind a new Web3 technology stack that I believe will bring tremendous new value and hope to both crypto and fiat ecosystems. The stack includes a new L1, decentralized exchange ( DEX), wallet, and a deep integration with Integral - the world's largest OTC trading network. You won't find much information online about CoDEX because they haven't made any public announcements yet.

In an interview Monday with the Star Tribune, the woman — in recovery at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo — said the deputy shot her as she was removing a handgun from her shirt. "I was outside the SUV when I got shot," said 20-year-old Shequoya Basswood, who splits her time between the Mahnomen area and Minneapolis. "He told me to put my hands on the hood.
JP Morgan exits R3 blockchain group
JP Morgan has become the latest participant to withdraw from blockchain consortium R3. Charley Cooper, a managing director at R3, confirmed the departure of one of the group’s founding members. "JP Morgan parted ways with R3 to pursue a very distinct technology path which is at odds with the one chosen by the global financial services industry, represented by our 80-plus members," said Cooper. JP Morgan declined to comment.
