1 Introduction The genus Helichrysum Mill. (Asteraceae family) includes approximately 600 accepted species distributed worldwide [1, 2]. Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don, commonly known as immortelle, is a typical Mediterranean plant that grows in arid areas of Southern Europe on alkaline, dry, sandy, and poor soils [3]. It is an aromatic shrub, 30–70 cm high [4], with elongated, linear leaves. The underside of leaves is silvery due to tomentose and glandular hairs [5].

Abstract : Juniperus sabina L. var. balkanensis R.P. Adams & Tashev is a recently described endemic variety from the Balkan Peninsula. Its strong sprouting ability and fast vegetative propagation, on one hand, and fragmented distribution, on the other, can lead to lower genetic diversity in local populations and to the differentiation of populations. As there has been no detailed investigation of this variety, we studied Balkan natural populations using phytochemical and molecular markers.
