1. Introduction The human body engages with its environment in diverse ways, one of which is the interaction between the lungs and the external environment through the act of breathing. The extensive surface area of the lungs, coupled with an incredibly thin air–blood barrier, exposes this vital organ to particles suspended in the inhaled air. The repercussions of this particle–lung interaction can be detrimental to health when inhaled aerosols contain toxic pollutants.
