Festivals Galore – Pick Your Pleasure – Gain a Family
“Festival season” is all year long worldwide. Whatever your passion or persuasion, you can gather with similar festivalites to enjoy music, food, dance, craft and vibe. Galician pipes? Celtic tunes? The Dead and their ilk? Reggae? Mountain picking? Tuvan throat singing? Banjopalooza? Funk? Rock? Emo? There’s a day, weekend, or week for everything. Festival, schmestival – if you enjoy what’s happening, go for it. The word “festival” comes from the Latin festivus, meaning joyful or celebratory.
Protest Songs Springeth Forth
Joan Baez and Bruce Springsteen in Minneapolis Protest songs are blasting into the internet’s spaces faster than I can tally. Facebook and Instagram feeds are bursting at the phone edges thanks to AlGoRithm. Some of the artists are younger than my grandkids, some are even older than I.
Kevin Carr is all in!
When I dropped into the middle of Steve Shapiro’s curated Kevin Carr YouTube playlist, my first instinct was to reach immediately for earplugs. Dozens upon dozens of festival recordings likely made with amateur devices (I’m betting even a Walkman or two) produced a growing desire to ditch the deep dive. You know the video type: people in a huge multi-layered circle, standing in the dirt, and all but the loudest sounds escape into the air. The pipes, played mostly by amateurs, dominate.
Bloom Where Planted
Never has community been more critical to our survival as humans. Art intake provides spirit nourishment to stay in the fight, pursue the dream, lend a hand, and stay strong. I’m a newcomer to Sacramento – and friends in my prior location assured me I’d bloom where I planted. This latest move is the second time I’ve uprooted in under 10 years. Life has a way of not always going according to plan. For me, there’s always been music as my web of connection as I navigate.
New Year = New Music
When one year ends and another begins one of my favorite activities is finding new music from artists I already love or discovering artists who I’ve never heard. This year the second part was especially easy for me because I’d moved – from a smallish town in northern Arizona to Sacramento, the state capitol of California.
Live Music: A Nourishing Banquet
A quick search of folk songs that mention food brings up Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant, Guy Clark’s Homegrown Tomatoes, Jimmy Buffet’s Cheeseburger in Paradise, Hank Williams’s Jambalaya, and (insert your favorite). Talk with enough traveling troubadours and they’ll tell of struggling to afford to eat at some point in their careers – or of being fed a steady diet of deep-fried bar food likely to clog their arteries faster than they can change strings.
GUEST EDITORIAL: Vote 'yes' on city's charter propositions
Soon Tahlequah residents will begin receiving their absentee ballots, or planning to go to the polls in-person on Tuesday, Feb. 14. They will receive a ballot for contested city elected positions, including for mayor and Wards 3-4 councilors, and eight propositions to amend the Tahlequah City Charter. The charter was adopted in 1940, before the U.S. entered World War II and while Franklin D. Roosevelt was U.S. president.
FOTAS: Male FOTAS volunteers make in impact on shelter pets
They come from different backgrounds. The time they have to give varies by age and circumstances. What they share is the exhilaration of animal rescue. They are the men of FOTAS. Ahmed Samaha grew up in Key West, Florida, and has spent the last 27 years as a college administrator at USC Aiken. Beginning as the director of intramural sports, he currently serves as vice chancellor of student engagement and inclusivity.
FOTAS: Volunteers make a difference at Aiken County Animal Shelter
What makes Monday the best, most rewarding day of the week? It’s the day I volunteer at the Aiken County Animal Shelter. People often ask: Isn’t it sad? Don’t you want to adopt every animal? Aren’t you concerned about bringing diseases home to your own pets? Can walking a dog or playing with a kitten really make a difference? The answers: No, no, no and yes. The most important thing to know is that the Aiken County Animal Shelter is a clean, bright and happy place.
