But the radical shift in agenda instigated by the Department for Education (DfE) market review between 2022 and 2024 brought this change to another level. A polished gem Moraine State Park, the third largest state park in the commonwealth, is a recreational gem. However, Lake Arthur, the sixth largest inland lake in the state with 3,225 acres and 42 miles of shoreline, has not always been there. Lake Arthur is a manmade re-creation of a much larger glacier lake that existed roughly 140,000 years ago during the Illinoian Ice Age. Prior to this ice age, the area around the park looked a lot different. The rivers flowed north.

Racial slurs written on college van
A Wartburg College mail delivery vehicle was found with racial slurs written on the windows early Saturday morning. The obscenities, which read “Go Nazis” and “N-word die,” were written in the frost on the vehicle, which was parked outside of the Student Center. Photos of the obscenities have spread among students. Yecenia Andrade, a sophomore, said she saw them. “Hate crimes like these shouldn’t be tolerated,” Andrade said. The college has been notified of the situation.
Wartburg offers new Bachelor of Science degree
A new Bachelor of Science degree is being made available to all Wartburg students with a major in science engineering.
Students prepare for a week of service
As tour week approaches, Wartburg students are preparing for another round of service trips. Andrew Richlen, a three-year veteran service trip leader, said he will be leading the largest trip he has ever led, a group of 19, in Fort Collins, Colorado. “We plan on volunteering at a wolf sanctuary and we are told we will get to have some interaction with some wolves as well,” Richlen said.
Students connect through Steeple to Steeple program
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School shares a close connection with Wartburg and its students through a Steeple to Steeple program made available to a variety of departments on campus. Located near the college, St. Paul’s provides students with opportunities to volunteer and engage themselves in Waverly. Dr. Penni Pier, the journalism and communication department chair, involves the St. Paul’s and Wartburg relationship in several of her classes.
Conservancy has 18 months to raise funds for North Kitsap land, waterfront acquisition
PORT GAMBLE — Cascade Land Conservancy has formed a “formidable” partnership with Pope Resources and several interested organizations to acquire 7,000 acres of Pope Resources land around Port Gamble for preservation. The conservancy has 18 months to identify its funding sources to buy 7,000 acres of forest land and 1.8 miles of shoreline from Olympic Property Group, Pope Resources’ real estate arm.
Viking Avenue will revive tree-lighting ceremony; businesses studying ways to spur economy
POULSBO — Viking Avenue businesses are reviving the thoroughfare’s Christmas tree-lighting ceremony this year in an endeavor to bring consumers and residents back to the once-busy district. The event, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 25, 6:30 p.m., at a site to be determined, will include food vendors and entertainment. It’s been 20 years since the last ceremony was held, said Elda Armstrong, office manager at ADA Engineering on Viking. She also owns St. Mick’s Tree Farm and will donate the tree.
