Distribution and Host Selection of the Chigger Mite Leptotrombidium rupestre, a Potential Vector of Scrub Typhus, in Southwest China
1 Introduction Chiggers (chigger mites) are the exclusive vector of Orientia tsutusgamushi (Ot), the causative agent of scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease) (Xu et al. 2017). Although there have been more than 3000 species of chiggers recorded in the world, the most effective vectors of Ot come from the genus Leptotrombidium of the family Trombiculidae (Lerdthusnee et al. 2002; Elliott et al. 2019).
