Background: Microdialysis (μD) can be used to monitor local metabolism in tissues both in vitro and in vivo. A μD catheter is used to recover molecules from the extracellular fluid by passive diffusion across a semipermeable membrane. The sized of the molecules recover depend on the pore size in the membrane, usually 10 to 100 kDa. Most studied is glucose, lactate, pyruvate, and glycerol.
