1 Introduction Global civilization is critically dependent upon water supply systems, yet most of society is incognizant of these “hidden” structures (Kanoi et al., 2022). Beyond gross consumption, the location and design of public water supply systems are pivotal to water usage and conservation (Stanislawski & Shavers, 2021). Regional water demands significantly impact distant ecosystems, mediated by expansive infrastructure and societal connections (Yu et al., 2020).
