Escaping Florida's Heat in a Canadian Log Home
Story by Anne Gardon and Perry Mastrovito It was one of those kismet moments, when destiny steered a dynamic man toward a house in dire need of some tender loving care. Lee Morris and his wife Jeannine, an American couple from Miami, were visiting friends in Montreal who invited them to an outing in Mont-Tremblant. “We didn’t know the Laurentians region at all and we were pleasantly surprised. The scenery was so beautiful and the ambience very hospitable,” declares Lee.

Then she got married and they built their own place. Eventually Cheryl inherited this house, and the couple faced a dilemma: which house to keep, their current one or the ancestral home? So they put them both up for sale, leaving the decision to chance.

Loved the old Mont-St-Hilaire property, but added a new ‘old’ house
It was a “love at first sight moment” for Alain Blanchet and Mélissandre Chicoine when they came upon a property for sale in Mont-St-Hilaire in December 2013. Sort of. “What immediately struck us was the large (8,547 square metres/92,000 square feet) lot the original house sat on and its wooded area at the back,” Chicoine explains. The property also had outbuildings housing animals and a mare, which the couple also purchased.
Reclaiming heritage and home in Queen Anne Revival house in St-Esprit

Couple spent 35 years updating their ‘new old home’ in Laval
Michel and Lauraine DeSeve have always had a liking for antique objects and furniture, including old houses and automobiles. In 1974, while living in an apartment in Côte-des-Neiges with their two young children, the couple jumped at the chance to buy a small chalet (7.92 m x 7.92 or 26 feet by 26 feet) in Laval’s north end. Built in 1927, the single-floor structure was in poor condition and lacked a proper foundation, standing on four wooden posts barely two feet off the ground.

A Scandinavian-Style Log Cabin in Canada
When Mario Lavoie and Carole Rousseau began looking for a country home, they knew it had to be made of wood. But when they arrived at a property overlooking a quiet lake near Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard in the Laurentian mountains, it wasn’t the house that instantly won them over. Instead, when they saw the breathtaking views, “It was love at first sight,” says Carole. The fact that the land came with a gorgeous log home and a beautifully landscaped, terraced garden sealed the deal.

From the front, the house appears modest in size, though it actually features a sizable footprint at 50-by-34 feet. Timber frame elements are visible on the facade of the pièce sur pièce house built in 1999. A sod roof tops the home’s detached two-car garage. More commonly found in Europe than North America, living roofs are good insulators and are healthy for the environment.
Humour and spontaneity are on display in contemporary Mont-Tremblant home
A home’s interior decor should be functional, convey a certain ambiance, and reflect the occupant’s inner personalities, interior decorators say. After having been greeted with cheerful smiles by Barb and Mel (who preferred their last name not be used) at their getaway home in Mont-Tremblant, it quickly became evident to me that these points couldn’t be more true.

The Intriguing History of Quebec’s Log Homes
In Quebec and throughout much of North America, the first log homes erected in the 17th century by newly-arrived settlers from Europe were often just small, simple, rustic square log cabins. Built with hand tools such as saws, axes, chisels and planes, these cabins provided the newcomers with a basic roof over their heads to stay warm, dry and safe.

Luminous, airy, almost minimalist, yet inviting and comfortable. This house is the latest creation of a Josée Sarda, a woman who is most happy in a new setting. It is after all the sixth house she’s had constructed and decorated. “I don’t get attached to things and I love change,” Sarda explained.
