AP‘s report (3/29/20) on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s downplaying of Covid-19 called it a “life-or-death coronavirus gamble”—but AP‘s standard description of the disease, included in this and many other stories, offers similar false reassurance. There’s a boilerplate passage that the Associated Press likes to insert into its stories on the coronavirus (e.g., 3/28/20, 3/29/20, 3/30/20).

Readers in the paper’s home city might have been particularly interested in the count for the state of New York—which, according to the map, was up to 5,200+ cases: New York Times print edition (3/20/20), giving the number of reported Covid-19 cases as of 3/19/20.

Every news outlet ought to have a chart like this one, from the Financial Times, featured prominently on their home page—because there is no more important question in the coronavirus crisis right now than how to get off the path led by Italy and onto the track of countries like Singapore. This Financial Times chart (3/16/20) indicates where countries are headed if they continue on their present pandemic path.
