1 Introduction Translation of novel ideas into clinical practice is often associated with animal experiments to validate hypotheses of methods and applications. In Europe, the 3R concept of replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal experiments was transferred into a legally binding directive in the year 2020.[1] One alternative to animal testing comes with the development of (technical) models that closely replicate the properties of biological tissue.
