1 Introduction Irrigated agriculture has significant potential to increase resilience against drought and increase agricultural production and food security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) (Bjornlund, Bjornlund, and Van Rooyen 2020). Nonetheless, only 4% of the farming land in SSA is under irrigation, compared with 9% in Europe, 13% in the Americas and 41% in Asia (Burney, Naylor, and Postel 2013).
