The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has finally approved the terms of a dramatic electricity tariff cut to South Africa’s remaining, and struggling, ferrochrome smelters, bringing their electricity costs down from more than R1.30/kWh to just 62c/kWh. The decision has allowed the two main remaining smelters, Glencore and Samancor, to lift section 189 redundancy notices to thousands of staff, including many highly skilled workers.
