Peter Defazio – Authoritarian Actions Are Escalating – Stop It With Your Vote!
Friends– Every weekday, about 1,000 democracy scholars are asked to rate the threats to American democracy. Their average becomes the Authoritarian Threat Index, a score from 1 (healthy democracy) to 5 (dictatorship), tracked since 2017. Their latest? “Rapidly Escalating.” View the index I spent 36 years in Congress, and I’m not easily rattled. This rattles me. Politicized institutions. Disinformation. A president who treats checks and balances like an insult.
Who Does Our Gov’t Actually Work For? We Must Decide It’s for Us This November – Peter DeFazio
CommunityHuman InterestNationalOpinionOregonRogue Valley Friends, Every headline in the last two years begs the question: Who does our government actually work for? Working people trying to afford groceries, housing, health care, and child care? NOPE. People seeking reproductive health care? CERTAINLY NOT. Folks worried about the climate crisis? LAUGHABLE.
DeFazio: Government Ought to Work for the People Not for Billionaires, Lobbyists, or a Wanta Be Dictator
Friends, I think the government ought to work for the people — not for billionaires, corporate lobbyists, or a President obsessed with feeding his own ego. It’s not a radical idea. It’s actually right there in the word “Representative:” members of Congress are sent to Washington to represent the interests of their constituents. That simple fact of politics (and grammar) is totally lost on Congressional Republicans.
Peter DeFazio: Don’t Be Discouraged by Virginia’s Set Back, Here Is Why
This Weekend Read comes from Robert B. Hubbell with a clear message for Democrats rattled by the Virginia Supreme Court’s decision: take five minutes to be angry, then get back to work. In “Don’t Believe the Doomsayers,” Hubbell argues that while the ruling is unquestionably anti-democratic, it does not fundamentally alter the outlook for the 2026 midterms. Democrats were favored to win the House before the decision, and they remain favored today.
Peter DeFazio Wants Us To Elect Democrats To Congress Who Have A Spine - His Plan
Oregonians, Donald Trump is marching this country toward another unauthorized war — and once again, Congress is failing to do its damn job. Donald Trump launched a major military operation in Venezuela without a vote in Congress, without a clear legal justification, and without any plan for what comes next. American troops were put in danger. Civilians were killed. Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were spent. And the American people are still waiting for Congress to do something.
Future of clean energy and salmon depends on collaboration, not courts | Op-Ed
When President Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the Bonneville Dam in 1937, he called it a “yardstick for the future” — a promise that the Pacific Northwest could generate clean, affordable power for all. Nearly nine decades later, that promise endures. Hydropower remains the beating heart of our region’s clean energy system, providing reliable, carbon-free electricity to millions of homes and businesses. It’s a legacy rooted in bipartisan support.
TSA must close the scheduled charter loophole before disaster strikes
The American lessons on aviation security have been hard-earned. I was the ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Aviation subcommittee in Congress on Sept. 11, 2001, and after that tragic day, government, industry, and safety advocates came together to demand change. I coauthored the bill that created the Transportation Security Administration and thanks to this law and the incredible work of thousands of TSA officers, we have prevented terrorist attacks and saved lives.
Biden, Congress must address China’s efforts to undermine the Inflation Reduction Act
The Inflation Reduction Act has spurred historic investments in America’s renewable energy sector. However, the Chinese Communist Party could put these investments at risk with its coordinated efforts to undermine America’s energy independence and exert control over our energy future. As countries increasingly deploy renewable energy, Beijing and Washington recognize that solar power is a critical piece of the renewable puzzle — for two very different reasons.

Peter DeFazio: 'Hoyle is that Democrat' to rep the 4th Congressional District
I have represented Oregon’s 4th Congressional District for nearly 36 years. I have recently seen letters to the editor and statements from candidates totally divorced from the political reality of this district. It’s going to be a tough election year, so I have to set the record straight. Parts of the district outside Eugene and Corvallis have been trending Republican for years.

Aviation safety and 5G can coexist, but stakeholders must work together
Feb. 3, 2022 at 8:01 am By and Special to The Times The rollout of our country’s 5G wireless network has been marked by delays, dysfunction and denial. It didn’t have to be this way! In 2019, aviation stakeholders, policymakers like us and safety advocates loudly warned it would be a grave mistake to turn on 5G without first ensuring that interference from these powerful networks wouldn’t adversely impact aviation safety.
Guest View: Build Back Better needs to build on momentum with push for electric vehicles
World leaders gathered for the U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland with a difficult task: dramatically cut carbon pollution to ensure a livable planet, climate and future. In Oregon, as in the rest of the United States, the transportation sector is the largest contributor to global warming emissions. That’s why it’s so important to decarbonize the transportation sector if we are serious about rising to the generational challenge of fighting climate change.

PSR Point/Counterpoint: Fortune
July 22, 2021 Class I, Freight, News, Regulatory Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief E. Hunter Harrison (1944-2017). CSX photo. Editor’s Note: Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) continues to be, in a word, controversial. This operating method traces its origins to the late Hunter Harrison and the Illinois Central in the early 1990s. It was subsequently adopted by CN following its acquisition of IC.
Commentary: Wall Street is boosting profits in railroads with new technology. But it’s ignoring the drawbacks
Wall Street's support of precision scheduled railroading is less about efficiency than it is a money grab, writes Rep. Peter DeFazio.

Rep. Peter DeFazio, running for U.S. House: 'You know where I stand'
Rep. Peter DeFazio If you watch some of the ads Alek Skarlatos is running against me, I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t recognize me. I sure don’t recognize the person portrayed in those ads. But here’s the truth: I’m still the same Peter DeFazio. My home is still in Springfield. And unlike other politicians, I’m direct. Whether you agree or disagree with me, you know where I stand. The same cannot be said of Skarlatos. Skarlatos has said that he does not believe in government health care.
Why the Jones Act is still needed 100 years later
One hundred years ago today, President Woodrow Wilson enacted a law that would become known as the Jones Act. Its purpose was to help the U.S. shipping industry recover after World War I. Yet few could have predicted how vital it would become to our national security and economic prosperity a full century later — especially during a pandemic. The Jones Act requires that all vessels carrying goods between two U.S. points be American-built, -owned, -crewed and -flagged.
Federal Spending: Oregon's DeFazio reacts to House passing $1.4 trillion plan
Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04) released the following statement on the FY2020 spending agreement: “Yesterday the House passed two bills that will fund the federal government through Fiscal Year (FY) 2020. The first package, for which I voted in support, includes a number of provisions that will have a positive impact on Oregonians’ lives. First, I am proud to have worked in conjunction with Senators Merkley and Wyden as well as Rep.

Iowa deserves high-quality highways and bridges
Regardless of your political ideology, we can all agree that America’s infrastructure network is essential to our quality of life and to the Nation’s economy. Our expansive national network of highways, bridges, tunnels, railways, waterways, and airports is capable of providing all Americans – from those living in the largest cities to those in the smallest towns – with extraordinary freedom of mobility and unprecedented opportunity.
Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio is very skeptical of congestion pricing
ODOT Assistant Director Travis Brouwer (left) and U.S. House Rep. Peter DeFazio at the hearing yesterday. (Photos: C-SPAN) It’s not easy to make an Oregon Department of Transportation official sound like a progressive on any transportation issue; but that’s exactly what U.S. Congressman Peter DeFazio did at a House Transportation Committee hearing in Washington D.C. yesterday where the veteran lawmaker’s skepticism around congestion pricing was on full display.
We must build the Gateway project-and we will
Across our country, in communities large and small, our outdated and oversubscribed infrastructure is at a breaking point, the result of years of federal underinvestment in transportation and a lack of political courage in Washington, D.C. Nowhere is that more apparent than in New York and New Jersey, where I recently got a firsthand look at the largest infrastructure project in our nation, the Gateway Program.

PORTS + POLITICS: The Need for Real Federal Investment in Our Nation’s Ports, Harbors and Waterways
The importance of federal investment in our nation’s infrastructure has been forgotten by many. That is why one of my highest priorities this Congress is to pass legislation to permanently unlock the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund. * By Peter DeFazio, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure * We are entering into an exciting new era for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
DeFazio on Climate Change
In response to Jim Neu’s letter to the editor “Get With It, Pete” (Nov. 21) on the issue of climate change and fossil fuel and carbon pollution: Jim, I’ve been with it for more than 20 years. In November 1998, in recognition of my leadership role on climate change on the Natural Resources Committee, I was chosen as the Democratic House representative to the Kyoto Protocol conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Democrats' infrastructure plan is bigger than Trump's
'A Better Deal to Rebuild America' won't sell off our valuable infrastructure: Opposing view The federal commitment and role in building and maintaining our national infrastructure is as old as our country itself. Congress has invested in this vision of a national transportation system, knowing that that is what binds our national economic well-being, security and people together — until now.

My Turn: FDA wrong on Frankenfish
Despite overwhelming opposition from scientists, consumers and fishermen, the product commonly referred to as “Frankenfish” could unknowingly be your choice for dinner as early as 2017. For those unfamiliar with genetically engineered salmon, these products are nothing short of science fiction, recently being described as a scene from the newest “Jurassic Park” film.
House bill would maintain transportation spending status quo - Business, Government Legal News from throughout WV
WASHINGTON (AP) - A bipartisan, six-year bill introduced in the House would hold transportation spending at current levels despite widespread calls to dramatically increase the money available to rehabilitate or replace aging highways, bridges and rail systems. The Senate passed a similar bill in July that authorizes current transportation spending levels adjusted for inflation plus a bit extra, but provides funds only for the first three years. The House bill, introduced Friday by Reps.
