NIO Sales Popping — 44% Growth! - CleanTechnica
which is kinda the point... Previously, Chinese companies were able to sell at the same price as European automakers (or slightly under), and rake in the profits due to the massive disparity between their lower operational costs, and the retail price.
The myth of nuclear reliability - Openforum
“No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong.” – Einstein From the examples below it is clear that the claim of nuclear reliability is wrong. As a student in the late 1960s I watched a training film which assured us that nuclear power was available every hour of every day and it would soon be “too cheap to meter” (Chairman of US Atomic Energy Commission 1954).

Future nuclear options - Openforum
There are several new technologies which may transform the nuclear industry, possibly lowering costs and improving flexibility. If these plants are successful, they may appear to be a good solution in Australia. However, they have been four to ten years away since the 1970’s. Over many years, billions of dollars have been spent on the promise of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors in the US, UK, China, France, Japan and Russia and even Argentina.
Is nuclear power a solution for Australia? - Openforum
This is an update on an article originally written in 2019. The most surprising change since then is the lack of progress in global nuclear energy. Although there are many more proposed nuclear plants and SMR designs, output from nuclear energy last year was less than in 2019 and new capacity barely exceeded retirements, while SMRs are still nine years away. People often ask why Australia does not have nuclear power because we have a lot of uranium.

Victoria's power system is proving more resilient than people thought
“Predictions are very difficult – especially about the future”, or “Past performance is no guarantee of future returns”. Two well known sayings that remind us that whatever is predicted below may turn out to be wrong. But what is true – on the evidence so far – is that the predictions of imminent disaster with Victoria’s electricity supply have been wide of the mark. In 2019, Victoria had 3 days of record or near record heat where the power system was highly stressed.
How did wind and solar perform in the recent heat-wave?
There has been a lot of commentary – in conservative media and political circles – about renewables failing during the power crisis. Detailed inspections suggests the opposite is true. And it is worth clarifying a few points about the operation of power systems to illustrate why. All power systems have gas plants as backup and most have diesel as well, because the speed of response and low capital cost offset the lower operating cost of coal plants when the gas or diesel plants are used sparingly.
Why NEG may kill new renewable projects, even those with finance in place
After initially seeing the NEG as a possible win for consumers and the environment, I now see it as an almost certain disaster for prices, reliability and emissions. The basic information is this. So even with the retirement of Liddell and availability of only 60 per cent from batteries: Peak demand is likely to be 35GW minus *0.3(demand fall) and minus 3.0GW (demand response) = 31GW. Available despatchable capacity will be 39GW +0.6*1.7(storage) =40GW. i.e. a reserve margin of 29 per cent.
Gas could be the most expensive, least reliable path to grid stability
The discussion on inertia and synchronous generation is rather confused. Inertia is necessary because it provides stability to the grid. “Strength” and “stiffness” are terms that are used to show that lots of rotating inertia is “good’ or even essential to a stable grid. Because it was free it is often assumed that the system needs as much generator inertia as it always had.
Iran's Banks Have Many Challenges, But Also Opportunities
Last week I should have been presenting to a treasury and risk conference we held for Iranian banks in Teheran. However, the vagaries of the civil service meant my visa did not materialise in time and I was unable to travel. Nevertheless, in preparation I had delved into the situation there and found it at a very interesting crossroads.
IT Innovation at the Heart of The Israeli Economic Conundrum - FusionWire
For a country that is often perceived as being at the centre of a warzone, life in Israel not only seems remarkably normal, but is thriving. Hotels are full with international visitors (tourism was up 25% in the first two months of this year), restaurants are fully booked and the streets of Tel Aviv are bustling in the spring sunshine as people overflow from the offices, bars and coffee shops.
