Building the backbone for Europe’s biodiversity monitoring - Nature Reviews Biodiversity
Abstract Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented pace, eroding the planet’s natural heritage and destabilizing the ecosystems that sustain societies and economies. Meeting global commitments — from the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to the European Green Deal — demands precise and consistent tracking of biodiversity change from genes to ecosystems. Yet current monitoring is fragmented, uneven and rarely integrated across borders.
Landscape effects on global soil pathogenic fungal diversity across spatial scales - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Growing evidence has shown that, apart from local environmental factors, changes in landscape-level factors by accelerated land-use change can also shape soil pathogenic fungal diversity. However, the global representativeness of such patterns remains unclear.

Are Findings of Key Insect Metrics Generalizable Across Different Taxa in Malaise Trap Samples?
1 Introduction Reports of declines in flying insects during recent decades (Shortall et al. 2009; Hallmann et al. 2017; Lister and Garcia 2018) suggest substantial losses of insect biodiversity and key ecological functions, such as pollination or decomposition (Cardoso et al. 2020; Powney et al. 2019; Ghisbain et al. 2023, 2024; Dangles et al. 2011). However, questions remain about the broader representativeness of these studies, and the drivers of reported trends.
Human contributions to global soundscapes are less predictable than the acoustic rhythms of wildlife - Nature Ecology & Evolution
|
Abstract Across the world, human (anthropophonic) sounds add to sounds of biological (biophonic) and geophysical (geophonic) origin, with human contributions including both speech and technophony (sounds of technological devices). To characterize society’s contribution to the global soundscapes, we used passive acoustic recorders at 139 sites across 6 continents, sampling both urban green spaces and nearby pristine sites continuously for 3 years in a paired design.

Recovery and Degradation Drive Changes in the Dispersal Capacity of Stream Macroinvertebrate Communities
1 Introduction Freshwater ecosystems harbor disproportionate levels of biodiversity relative to their spatial extent and provide key goods and services for society, including water for domestic use, industry, agriculture, recreation, energy production, and transportation corridors (Geist 2011; Haase et al. 2023).
Successes and failures of conservation actions to halt global river biodiversity loss - Nature Reviews Biodiversity
Abstract To address the losses of river biodiversity worldwide, various conservation actions have been implemented to promote recovery of species and ecosystems. In this Review, we assess the effectiveness of these actions globally and regionally, and identify causes of success and failure. Overall, actions elicit little improvement in river biodiversity, in contrast with reports from terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Inland navigation and land use interact to impact European freshwater biodiversity - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Inland navigation in Europe is proposed to increase in the coming years, being promoted as a low-carbon form of transport. However, we currently lack knowledge on how this would impact biodiversity at large scales and interact with existing stressors. Here we addressed this knowledge gap by analysing fish and macroinvertebrate community time series across large European rivers comprising 19,592 observations from 4,049 sampling sites spanning the past 32 years.

The Life and Art of Frank Molnar | Eve Lazarus
Update: Frank passed away in December 2020 I dropped around to see Frank Molnar this week and was happy to see that he’s painting again. Frank is pushing 80 now and he’s not in great health, but you could never tell this from his work. I met Frank several years ago when I profiled him as part of the Unheralded Artists of B.C. series. I got to hang out with Frank and his wife Sylvia in their little Point Grey home that’s filled with his stunning nudes, drawings and still lifes.
