Within the span of a few weeks, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh with an iron fist for over 15 years, was forced to resign and flee to India due to a student uprising. Now, with an interim government that has promised to hold a free and fair election in the near future, Bangladeshis must ask themselves how Ms. Hasina was able to consolidate power and transform herself into an autocrat.

The Commission on Accreditation for Corrections (CAC) and the American Correctional Association (ACA) awarded reaccreditation to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility Aug. 16 in recognition for maintaining excellence in the operations of adult correctional institutions. In March 2024, three civilian corrections consultants spent a week at Fort Leavenworth validating 573 performance-based standards and expected measures for the USDB and MWJRCF.

The United States Disciplinary Barracks hosted a post-secondary commencement ceremony for students who earned college degrees from multiple colleges and universities Aug. 2 in the USDB visitation room on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Under U.S. Code Title 10, the Army provides for the education, training, rehabilitation and welfare of offenders confined at the USDB. The motto of the USDB is “Our Mission – Your Future.” The USDB prepares inmates to return to society as productive citizens.
