Advent has its calendars and its wreaths; Christmas its carols and ivy, its trees and gift exchange; Epiphany its king cakes and magi; Lent its fasts, sobriety, and silence; Palm Sunday its processions with palms; Holy Saturday its vigils and bonfires; Easter its lilies and its fresh clothes. On Pentecost, many dress in Spirit-fire red.

I ‘m late to the party, but, at a friend’s suggestion, I recently watched Detectorists, a BBC Four comedy that ran for three seasons between 2014 and 2022. Created, written, and directed by Mackenzie Crook (who appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean and the English Office), it follows members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club (DMDC), especially Andy Stone (Crook) and Lance Stater (Toby Jones). As you might guess, obsessive metal detectorists are a little hapless, a little pathetic.

God Is Mocked - First Things

God is not mocked, Paul tells us (Gal. 6:7). Matthew’s Passion narrative (Matt. 27:27–44) suggests otherwise. Matthew tells us very little about Jesus’s physical sufferings. For him, the cross is mainly about man’s mockery of God. Pilate knows Jesus is innocent but turns him over to his soldiers for scourging and crucifixion.
