Permafrost landsystems define regional variability in climate change effects on northern environments
Abstract Anticipating the environmental and societal consequences of climate-driven permafrost thaw requires knowledge of terrain and subsurface conditions, which prove challenging to obtain at spatial scales necessary for rigorous prediction and decision-making.

Blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena fasciata males envenomate females to facilitate copulation
A variety of phylogenetically distant taxa, including flatworms, mollusks, amphibians, and fishes, use the deadly neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) for predation and defense 1 . A well-known example is the blue-lined octopus, Hapalochlaena fasciata (Hoyle, 1886), which uses symbiotic bacteria to sequester TTX in its posterior salivary glands (PSG) 2 . When it bites, the TTX-laden saliva immobilizes large prey and has caused lethal envenomation in a few incidents involving humans 3 .
Ordered and disordered stealthy hyperuniform point patterns across spatial dimensions
In previous work [Phys. Rev. X 5, 021020 (2015)] it was shown that stealthy hyperuniform systems can be regarded as hard spheres in Fourier space in the sense that the structure factor is exactly zero in a spherical region around the origin in analogy with the pair-correlation function of real-space hard spheres.

Critical-like slowdown in thermal soft-sphere glasses via energy minimization
Using hybrid molecular dynamics/SWAP Monte Carlo (MD/SMC) simulations, we show that while the terminal relaxation times for FIRE energy minimization of soft-sphere glasses can decrease by orders of magnitude as sample equilibration proceeds and the jamming density increases, they always scale as , where and is the average coordination number of particles satisfying a minimal local mechanical stability criterion () at the top of the final potential-energy-landscape (PEL) sub-basin the system...
Local stability of spheres via the convex hull and the radical Voronoi diagram
Jamming is an emergent phenomenon wherein the local stability of individual particles percolates to form a globally rigid structure. However, the onset of rigidity does not imply that every particle becomes rigid, and indeed some remain locally unstable. These particles, if they become unmoored from their neighbors, are called rattlers, and their identification is critical to understanding the rigid backbone of a packing, as these particles cannot bear stress.
Jamming, relaxation, and memory in a minimally structured glass former
Structural glasses form through various out-of-equilibrium processes, including temperature quenches, rapid compression (crunches), and shear. Although each of these processes should be formally understandable within the recently formulated dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) of glasses, the numerical tools needed to solve the DMFT equations up to the relevant physical regime do not yet exist.
Gareth Morse obituary: how an inspirational talent brought art to life
Gareth Morse was a landscape painter, an inspirational teacher, and a leading force in the foundation of art within the Western Australian College of Advanced Education, now known as Edith Cowan University, during the 1980s. Born in 1932 in the hard-scrabble mining region of the Rhondda Valley, Wales, he excelled at school, before moving to Bristol as a young man. There he studied fine arts and calligraphy at the West of England College of Art.
Generating large disordered stealthy hyperuniform systems with ultrahigh accuracy to determine their physical properties
Hyperuniform many-particle systems are characterized by a structure factor S(k) that is precisely zero as |k|→0; and stealthy hyperuniform systems have S(k)=0 for the finite range 0<|k|≤K, called the “exclusion region.” Through a process of collective-coordinate optimization, energy-minimizing disordered stealthy hyperuniform systems of moderate size have been made to high accuracy, and their novel physical properties have shown great promise.

Sage Maverick Saltwater Series
Peter Morse reviews the versatile Maverick fly rods from Sage December 14, 2020 The new saltwater Sage Maverick rod series is built using their premium Konnetic graphite technology. There are eight rods in the line-up from #6 to #14, (excluding a #13). The rods from 6–12 are all nine footers and the #14 is 8’6″. Cosmetically these rods look very sharp.
Synthesis and Utilization of Nitroalkyne Equivalents in Batch and Continuous Flow
We report a method for overcoming the low stability of nitroalkynes through the development of nitrated vinyl silyltriflate equivalents. Because of their instability, nitroalkynes have only rarely been utilized in synthesis. The reactivity of these silyltriflates, which are prepared in situ, is exemplified by dipolar cycloaddition reactions with nitrones to give highly substituted 4-nitro-4-isoxazolines in high yields.
