DJ Soxxy and Peter Ngure. /HANDOUT Fatherhood is more than provision. It is presence, nurturing, and the willingness to share the responsibilities of care. Happy Father's Day to you all. Yes, you, and you, and you. Today, we celebrate fathers. Before we go any further, someone recently mentioned that Father's Day is often less celebrated than Mother's Day. Should we see that as competition? Or should we, as men are often told to do, simply "man up" and take it as a compliment?

Struggling African universities are ignoring a rich, invaluable resource—their alumni
Universities across Africa are sitting on—and ignoring—a potential gold mine: their graduates. Research from the global North, where tracking and keeping in touch with alumni is common practice for universities, shows that this reaps huge benefits. Alumni pledges sometimes give money to their alma mater annually. Others use their influence in particular industries or business circles to convince others to donate. The situation is very different in African countries.

Merits in a regional approach to doctoral training in Africa
For example, South Africa produces 1,300 PhDs every year and yet the nation needs a minimum of 6,000. On the other hand, Kenya produces less than 300 PhDs and yet the demonstrated need is 1,000. The quality of the doctoral programmes in most countries in Africa is also low, with students struggling to fund their research with meagre resources. The quality of supervision and mentorship has dwindled over time with the few supervisors being stretched to the limits.
