A Crestfallen Students’ History: The 12ft-tall British coat of arms hiding behind the Quadrangle
Image: Google Maps At a recent sitting of the Comhairle Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, the matter of decolonisation was discussed at length. The need to decolonise university curriculums is a common theme of students’ union and academic debate, but in the case of Ollscoil na Gaillimhe we have a striking physical representation of colonialism on our doorstep that surprisingly few students know about.

Solana DEXes Just Out-Traded Binance: What It Means for You
Solana-based decentralized exchanges reportedly handled more trading volume than giants like Binance and Bybit for stretches of late 2025, shifting more crypto price discovery directly onto the blockchain. While SOL has traded in a wide range this year, on-chain activity and volumes on Solana DEXes, such as Jupiter, Orca, and Raydium, continue to hit new records. This happens as traders look for faster, cheaper venues, and institutions route more activity into crypto ETFs and tokenized assets.
Trump‑Backed WLFI Token Ends 2025 Down 40% as Political Crypto Hype Fades
Trump-backed World Liberty Financial’s WLFI token ended 2025 around 40% below its early trading highs, after one of the loudest political token launches in crypto history. The token, which initially traded above $0.30 and briefly attracted around $1 billion in trading volume in its first hour, now trades much closer to its early $0.15–$0.20 range. The drop lands after a year when speculative altcoins struggled while Bitcoin and top-layer‑1s soaked up most serious investor attention.
Investors Yank $952M From Crypto Funds as U.S. Policy Jitters Spike Original
Crypto investment funds reportedly saw $952 million leave in a single week, as big investors reacted to delays around the U.S. “Clarity Act” and other policy worries. Prices did not instantly crash across the board, but this kind of quiet exit from funds often shows up before you see the pain on regular spot charts. This is the latest chapter in a longer story where U.S. regulation and macro policy keep shaking confidence in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the wider market.

Google has quietly become a financial safety net for Bitcoin miners, providing at least $5 billion in credit support to help them pivot into Artificial Intelligence (AI). This isn’t a direct investment but something much smarter: a guarantee. Stocks of miners making this move, like Cipher and IREN, have surged between 300-500% in 2025 as a result. What Is Really Happening Between Google and Bitcoin Miners?
Hyperliquid Is Burning $1Bn In HYPE Tokens: But Is It Enough?
The Hyperliquid Foundation is moving to permanently remove roughly $1 billion worth of its HYPE tokens from supply. This bold action comes as the token’s price slides to seven-month lows, struggling against a wave of doubt. Prediction Market powered by First, let’s quickly define our terms.
Synthetix Ditches Layer-2s, Returns to Ethereum’s Mainnet

After a month of sluggish price action, investors are asking what’s next for Bitcoin. The world’s top crypto is down 5.5% in December, struggling to find a clear direction. To cut through the noise, some traders are looking at a different kind of signal: prediction markets, where users bet real money on future outcomes. What Exactly Are Prediction Markets? Billions Wasted, Debt Rising – O’Neill Says PNG PM Marape Has Lost Control
Former PNG PM Peter O’Neill has accused Prime Minister James Marape of losing control of the nation’s finances and plunging the country into record levels of debt despite spending over K56 billion in the past six years. O’Neill said Marape’s leadership had been marked by waste, arrogance, and a refusal to accept responsibility for the government’s failures. “It’s gut-wrenching to watch Marape blame governors, health authorities, and universities instead of facing the truth,” he said.

Our own Galway
Galway is some town to walk through in the fog on an early spring morning. In the low cloud, every old stone building is framed by fog and given an air of mystery and history. But as I crossed the Eglinton Canal by the Cathedral, I was struck by the one lonely building standing guard on the corner; Wards. A fine establishment, on the go since 1933.
Amnesia
In The Cure At Troy, Seamus Heaney dreamed of the day when hope and history would rhyme. And as I delved into the archives of student magazines and newspapers in the library last week, I found they did indeed find hope in their yellowing pages; each article adding to the collective tapestry of student life in Galway and although their content varies, the heart and soul of student journalism still roared back at me.

The Story behind 50 Years of Transport Investment in the Poorest Countries
The International Development Association (IDA) is a vital, yet oddly lesser known, arm of the World Bank Group. Briefly, IDA receives donor remittances and a portion of interest payments received from World Bank lending programs and disburses these funds as interest-free grants and subsidized loans to the poorest countries in lieu of traditional lending.
I will see you after the rainy season...
and this is no joke. Some time ago, I travelled to rural Nepal to supervise joint DFID/World Bank work in improving access to remote communities. To reach the first village, Dailekh, we took a morning flight from Kathmandu and then drove for many hours. The further we travelled, the more uneven and less engineered the roads became, until the last ten miles to our destination were mere mud tracks. Night fell, the roads grew dark, and rain began to fall.
The problem with rural transport is that it is rural, the solution is in branding
A major constraint with developing and maintaining rural roads is the fact that they are, unfortunately, rural. The areas where they are needed are often difficult to access, logistics become complicated, local contracting capability is limited, engineers are few and far between, and younger engineers especially, are not keen to leave the urban environment.

Stephen Fretwell: "Ireland is one of those countries where you walk on stage and you immediately feel that everyone is on your side"
The comeback album is always a tricky one. However, very few artists have had as long a gap between releases as Stephen Fretwell. After having the upward career trajectory of releasing 2007's Man on the Roof to critical acclaim, playing support slots with the likes of Oasis at Dublin's Marlay Park and having his 2005 track 'Run' become the theme song to the hit UK comedy Gavin & Stacey, Stephen appeared to have disappeared from the music industry.
