Scaffolding appraisal and reader awareness to enhance participatory writing in the Swedish middle-school classroom
ABSTRACT In this paper, we explore how participation and participatory writing can be enhanced through Appraisal theory and reader awareness. Democratic participation by the means of writing is a crucial and powerful tool.
OPINION: VC investments signal confidence in value of video as a BI tool
Peter Strom, March Networks This past year, the physical security market has seen continued demand for reliable IP video surveillance products. Marking this demand was an inflow of venture capital that drove up valuations for some new industry players to unprecedented levels. In addition to this new trend, the push toward leveraging video analytics for business intelligence (BI) and the demand for more cloud-based surveillance services continued.
Total Cost of Ownership Is Key to Evaluating Video Surveillance Options
Selecting the right video surveillance manufacturer to recommend to a customer can be one of the most important decisions an integrator will make. A system can generate a storm of complaints if it doesn’t measure up, or it can make you a hero and produce referrals to build your business.
Multiple Applications of a Novel Biarsenical Imaging Probe in Fluorescence and PET Imaging of Melanoma
Proteins are increasingly important as diagnostic agents and drugs. In 2019, the peptide drug market alone surpassed 70 billion USD,(1) and a large portion of newly developed positron emission tomography (PET) imaging biomarkers are peptides or antibodies.

Artificial intelligence for diagnosis and grading of prostate cancer in biopsies: a population-based, diagnostic study
Summary Background An increasing volume of prostate biopsies and a worldwide shortage of urological pathologists puts a strain on pathology departments. Additionally, the high intra-observer and inter-observer variability in grading can result in overtreatment and undertreatment of prostate cancer. To alleviate these problems, we aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system with clinically acceptable accuracy for prostate cancer detection, localisation, and Gleason grading.
The importance of study design in the application of artificial intelligence methods in medicine
We read the paper Nagpal et al.1 with great interest. The authors should be commended on a well-conducted study with an impressive number of pathologists grading the radical prostatectomy samples. We fully agree with the authors that AI will play an integral part in prostate cancer pathology and, indeed, in pathology in general.

Why AI, Analytics, Cloud and Cybersecurity Open New Opportunities for Integrators
March Networks President and CEO Peter Strom examines key security technologies and trends that systems integrators should be tracking currently. The need to bolster cyber defenses is expected to create demand for new equipment and software upgrades as the vulnerabilities of customers’ legacy equipment are exposed. I was recently asked which technologies are going to have the most significant impact on the physical security industry in the next few years.
Reply to Ola Bratt and Anna Öfverholm's Letter to the Editor re: Peter Ström, Tobias Nordström, Henrik Grönberg, Martin Eklund. The Stockholm-3 Model for Prostate Cancer Detection: Algorithm Update, Biomarker Contribution, and Reflex Test Potential. Eur U
We firmly believe that genetic testing will be an important part of future risk assessment for prostate cancer and, indeed, of precision medicine in general. Rather than omitting important risk factors in risk prediction models because they are measured by a genetic test, we prefer to work together on addressing the ethical and practical challenges they pose. The alternative is slower translation of clinically actionable research results, leading to inferior care.
Re: Peter Ström, Tobias Nordström, Henrik Grönberg, Martin Eklund. The Stockholm-3 Model for Prostate Cancer Detection: Algorithm Update, Biomarker Contribution, and Reflex Test Potential. Eur Urol. In press. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.eururo.2017.12.028
We read with interest the report on the utility of the updated version of the Stockholm-3 model as a reflex test for men with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) of ≥3 ng/ml [1[1] and compliment the research group for their meticulous work. There is, however, a concern that we would like to raise: addition of the analysis of the G84E mutation in the HOXB13 gene.
The Stockholm-3 Model for Prostate Cancer Detection: Algorithm Update, Biomarker Contribution, and Reflex Test Potential
After removing intact PSA and including the HOXB13 SNP in the set of predictors, and fitting the S3M to more data, we estimated an AUC of 0.75 (95% CI 0.73–0.77) for predicting GS ≥7 prostate cancers, which is a slight improvement compared to the result reported by Grönberg et al (AUC 0.74, 95% CI 0.72–0.75). From Table 2, Table 4 it is evident that the collection of predictors together is beneficial for reducing unnecessary biopsies.
