Associate Professor, La Trobe University When most people think about athlete recovery, their minds jump to ice baths, saunas, compression garments, or foam rollers. These strategies may have their place, of course, but one of the biggest misconceptions is that recovery is solely about these deliberate “tick-the-box” actions. As a practitioner, I always dislike when coaches or support staff ask an athlete “Have you done your recovery?” as if it were another session to complete.

Recovery is necessarily a constant, ongoing process in order to adapt to the stresses placed on the body. The key considerations to take into account are either physical or psychological, with each of them subdividing into acute recovery or longer-term adaptations. As such, recovery cannot be the result of a single strategy. Recovery should vary depending on team or athlete goals.
