Asbestos in Toys
A Guardian investigation reveals asbestos in children's toys sold in the UK, raising concerns about product safety and regulatory enforcement. Published on: 29 Jun 2026 Reading time: 1 minute read A recent Guardian investigation found asbestos fibres in five of six children's toys tested that were still being sold in Britain, despite UK laws banning the sale of products containing any amount of asbestos.
The Cephalopods Are Coming Original
The quaint seaside village of Lyme Regis is precariously perched between rugged black cliffs in southwestern England. It sits astride one of the most famous fossil sites in the world. On an autumn day several years ago, I left behind the crowded streets of souvenir shops selling fossils and T-shirts. I walked along the cliffs and over the ribbed rocks underlying the beach, stepping across one of the most devastating mass extinctions of the geological record.

You can create glowing art by using free NASA images of the sun. Here's how to do it
Peter Ward The Sun's glowing colours and varying ionisation levels in images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) have an unexpected visual cousin: the neon lights of theLas Vegas Strip. The resemblance is more than cosmetic. In both, low-pressure gas glows when energised. Around the Sun, that comes from intense heat and radiation; inside a neon tube, it's from an electric current.

Director and Producer
Following on from our previous article on contracting creative talent, in the latest article in our ongoing series on making an independent production, Peter Ward looks at some of the considerations when bringing on board producers and directors. Jargon buster – above the line and below the line At the outset, it is useful to debunk a piece of industry jargon in the context of the roles in a production, namely “above the line” and “below the line”.
Geldards advises the management team of Enotria & Coe on its agreement to be acquired by Majestic Wine
Geldards has advised the management team of Enotria & Coe in relation to Enotria’s formal agreement to be acquired by Majestic Wine. Once completed, the strategic acquisition is expected to bolster Majestic’s presence in the on-trade where it has recorded double-digit growth for three consecutive years.
Making a Production Part 3: Engaging the Creatives
Introduction The heart of any production is the talent: the writers, directors, producers, actors and musicians who contribute their unique skills and expertise to bring the production to life. In this article, Geldards Partner Peter Ward looks specifically at writers agreements and on-screen talent agreements, along with some pitfalls to watch out for.
Making a Production Part 2: Financing and Structuring
Introduction How do independent producers without the financial resources of a major studio or streamer go about structuring and paying for their production? In the second article of our Media and Entertainment Law series, we’ll look at everything from setting up a dedicated production company to financing and distributing the production, along with some of the key legal issues independent producers should be aware of. The first step for the producer is to set up a special-purpose vehicle or SPV.
A dangerous calculation
On 5 October, a month before the US presidential election, Elon Musk bounced onto the stage at a Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat and a T-shirt emblazoned with the logo “Occupy Mars”, the technology mogul leapt in the air, arms outstretched and midriff exposed, giving photographers the chance to catch his marionette-style pose in a now viral image. Silicon Valley has long maintained an uneasy relationship with politics.
What Is Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance varies depending on your chosen policy, but most products cover the same basic incidents and emergencies. These include the following. Lost or Stolen Baggage Lost or delayed luggage is the worst way to start or end a holiday, throwing your plans into chaos. Unfortunately, it’s all too common when travelling by air, but travel insurance almost always covers this issue. If your bags are stolen or lost, your insurance will cover the cost of replacing your belongings.
How Much Do I Need To Retire?
Retirement planning is an inherently stressful topic. But with the average retirement age creeping up, it’s more important than ever to get your finances in order early and set a clear plan for when you no longer want to work. In the United Kingdom, you can start collecting your state pension at age 66, though that age will gradually increase starting in 2026.
What Is an ISA? Guide to Saving Tax-Free
Interest made from savings accounts in the UK is usually taxable. For most people, the first £1,000 is considered your personal savings allowance and is not subject to tax, but anything beyond that figure is fair game for the HMRC. But unlike other savings accounts, you can invest up to £20,000 per year in an Individual Savings Account (ISA) without paying tax on the income and interest generated. The ISA has been around for 25 years and is more popular than ever.
What Is a Mortgage and How Does It Work?
A mortgage is a loan used to help buy a property. For most people, qualifying for a mortgage is an essential hurdle in the path to home ownership, and understanding the intricacies of this type of loan can help boost your chances of getting on the property ladder or making the most of your next move. The money you borrow in a mortgage is secured against the property you purchase.
Marriage Tax Allowance Explained
The marriage tax allowance allows married couples and those in civil partnerships to save some money on their taxes, particularly if one partner or spouse makes less money than the other. The government scheme effectively increases a couple's personal tax allowance, meaning more of their earnings are not taxed at all. At a time when the cost of living is relatively high, this tax relief could be crucial for couples looking to save money.
How To Invest In Gold
Gold is one of the most trusted commodities in the world today. Only so much gold exists, and this scarcity ensures it’s considered a safe-haven asset, meaning its value often rises in times of turmoil. Around 244,000 metric tonnes of the precious metal have been discovered to date, an amount that would fit into a cube 23 metres wide on each side. Investing in gold is easier than many people may believe, but there are several ways to do so and you must choose the correct method.
Zero-Hour Contracts: Everything You Need To Know
Zero-hour contracts have been the subject of much controversy in the United Kingdom over the past decade. This type of contract states that an employer is not obliged to provide employees with a minimum number of working hours. Critics say the practice is exploitative, while employers argue it gives workers flexibility. Recent government data showed that more than 1 million people are signed onto zero-hour contracts in the UK, but change is on the way.
What Is a High Interest Savings Account?
Saving money is crucial to ensure you can afford larger purchases and protect yourself against any surprise loss of earnings. Financial experts say you should have at least three months of savings locked away in case of an emergency. But deciding the best place to put your savings can be tricky. Savings accounts come in all shapes and sizes, and the best ones will give you the maximum amount of interest on your cash while providing you with the flexibility you need.
What Is Debt Consolidation and When Is It a Good Idea?
Debts can spiral out of hand quickly, especially if spread across loans, credit cards, and other financial commitments. For many, a deluge of loan repayments and credit card bills can become too much to keep track of, and the situation becomes highly stressful. Debt consolidation is one way consumers can simplify their financial position. It involves paying off debts by borrowing more money and lumping all they owe into one succinct payment plan.
How To Send Money Abroad
In our increasingly connected world, there are more reasons than ever to send money internationally. Whether sending cash to friends and family, paying for items in another country, or making a huge purchase like a house abroad, sending funds overseas can be confusing. Most will be tempted to head straight to their bank and arrange a wire transfer. But the fees can be high, and using other services can save time and effort.
Cleaning up the cosmos
The sky and the land were once connected, far more than they are today, according to the Gamilaroi people of Eastern Australia. In their creation stories, a traumatic event occurred aeons ago, which ripped humanity apart from the skies above. Other indigenous groups across the country teach similar stories, and many perform ceremonies to rebuild their bonds with Sky Country. As humans become an increasingly space-faring species, we might feel we’re getting closer to our Sun, the planets and stars.
10 Dropshipping Product Ideas
Dropshipping is an increasingly popular retail model for serious entrepreneurs as well as those looking to make a little cash on the side. However, the retail market can be highly competitive, and the profit margins with a dropshipping model can be razor-thin. For that reason, dropshipping entrepreneurs need to ensure they choose the best possible product to sell. They must conduct thorough research, including using Google trends and analysing the competition.
What Is Forex Trading?
The foreign exchange – sometimes referred to as forex or FX – market is one of the world’s largest marketplaces, where investors exchange national currencies. Forex trading was previously mostly popular with major financial institutions, but internet trading platforms have increased the number of retail traders investing in the FX market. Because the forex market is highly volatile, you can make a lot of money if you know what you’re doing.
Highest Paying Jobs In The UK
Every graduate entering the workforce, mid-career employee looking to switch careers, or frustrated office grunt seeking a pay rise should know the average pay for their profession. The cost-of-living crisis in the UK has forced many to examine their jobs and ask if they pay well enough to keep them comfortable. But what are the best professions to target if you make a move?
What Is a Wire Transfer?
Although the term ‘wire transfer’ is more commonly used in the United States – bank transfer is slightly more common here in the United Kingdom – it’s still worth knowing exactly what it means should someone ask you to wire them cash domestically or internationally. The wire transfer is one of the oldest and most reliable ways to transfer money from one person to another. The term comes from the telegraph lines used to move money electronically.

Keith Thomas · Noisomeness: Smells of Hell
Ionce asked the great historian Richard Southern whether he would like to have met any of the medieval saints and churchmen about whom he wrote so eloquently. He gave a cautious reply: ‘I think they probably had very bad breath.’ He may have been right about that, but it would be wrong to infer that this was something which didn’t bother them. The men and women of the Middle Ages may have had a greater aversion to unpleasant body odours than their descendants do now.
What Is Dropshipping and How Does It Work?
Dropshipping is a new and popular business model for entrepreneurs looking for a lower-risk introduction to ecommerce. A dropshipping company is a middleman between customers and ready-made products from a third-party manufacturer or wholesaler. It is not responsible for the costly and time-intensive parts of typical retail businesses like shipping and keeping stock.

The pursuit of immortality
Humanity’s pursuit of longevity has yielded impressive results over the last century. Life expectancy is up dramatically in most parts of the world, and new medical breakthroughs are tackling the most prolific of killers – cancer and heart disease. But the mission to radically extend life has hit something of a ceiling, as we realise that healthy living and exercise will only take us so far.
Re: Patient access to full general practice health records
Dear Editor, Richards et al's arguments to make GP records easily accessible online are widely accepted here. Both at Local Medical Committee and practice level, Gateshead GPs think it's a good thing. We still however were very alarmed by the recent attempt to force it upon us without adequate safeguards. Because of this we asked our provider not to allow it. Our computer system (EMISWeb) still does not easily allow us to redact information.

Dear Editor, I think it must be a fraught task, writing about Long Covid. Its list of symptoms are huge and we don't really know how it arises. I often feel inadequate faced with patients distressed by their Long Covid symptoms. I was bothered by the lack of any mention by the authors of a functional element to Long Covid. It seemed a huge omission to me.
NHS to tackle climate change: insulating buildings would be a good start
News & Views NHS to tackle climate...
Re: New legislation places duty on NHS to tackle climate change
Dear Editor, The Greener NHS scheme smacks of novelty and greenwashing. Often the improvements needed are mundane and boring, though I can see why NHSE have started this scheme, attempting to encourage eye catching, sexy ideas. We work in a single story flat roofed building owned and managed by NHS property services, renovated completely in 2010. Though they didn't insulate the roof! Above our ceiling tiles is the bare metal of the roof.

If you can't measure what is important...
Dear Editor In the Vietnam war the US military took to counting killed opponents as a way to measure success (1). In the words of one commentator, 'They could not measure what was important so they made what they could measure important'. I fear the authors' (and other Health Economists') enthusiasm for triage might lead them to make the same mistake. It is certainly true that many of the patients we see, in retrospect, did not need to see us on a stricltly medical basis.

Happy Holidays. In this special issue we are reprinting our top stories of the past year. This article first appeared online in our “Harmony” issue in August, 2021. We were all very tired. My crew and I had been tracking nautiluses off tiny Ndrova Island in Papua New Guinea for close to a week. Every day we spent 16 hours on small dugout canoes and then got eight hours of fitful sleep on the deck of a Melanesian sea craft. Rice and fresh tuna for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Pirates, Killer Whales, and Cheap Jewelry: A Life in Science - Oceans on Nautilus
In 1984 I was on an expedition outside the barrier reef in New Caledonia, an archipelago 750 miles east of Australia. The expedition was formed to study the daily migrations of the nautilus, the longest-lived animal survivor known to science. I was accompanied by, among others, Mike Weekley, a 26-year-old marine biologist, who had worked at the Waikiki Aquarium. Mike was a veteran of nautilus research trips, seemingly fearless, and an expert diver.
