Indy councilors advance data center moratorium with Hogsett’s backing

For the past year, hundreds of Indy residents have been pleading with their elected officials to stop developers from building data centers. The City-County Council appears to be listening. A committee of councilors voted 10-3 along party lines July 13 to advance a moratorium on approval of new data centers, which would take effect through the end of 2027. Along the way, Mayor Joe Hogsett, a Democrat, also released a statement in support of the moratorium.

The president of the City-County Council said she plans to introduce a proposal to enact a moratorium on construction of new data centers. Maggie Lewis, a Democrat who represents parts of the west side, will introduce the temporary ban at the July 13 meeting of the council’s Metropolitan and Economic Development Committee.

A quiet 25-acre park on the west side is getting a major facelift thanks to a $10 million grant from a foundation created by one of the world’s richest men and his wife. The Bezos Earth Fund, chaired by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his spouse, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, selected Rev. Mozel Sanders Park as one of eight projects nationwide for the philanthropic organization’s “Greening American Cities” initiative.
