Biography

Peter Gelling is the editor for the Middle East, Af/Pak and Africa at GlobalPost.

Before joining team in Boston, Gelling was GlobalPost's correspondent in Indonesia, where he also wrote for the New York Times from 2005 to 2010.

What was your first job as a journalist?

The first company to hire me was the Queens Tribune, where I was the associate editor. Freelanced in New York City before that.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Family had one when I was a kid. I liked the sound the keys made. But that was before I could read.

How is social media changing news?

In almost every way possible. But perhaps most importantly, it has given an outlet for alternative, independent voices.
