On 5 September 1926, 48 people died when a candle ignited highly flammable nitrate film in an upstairs cinema in the town.

Neighbours had gathered around a firepit in a garden at Loreto Convent Estate in Killarney on Saturday night when the blaze got out of control shortly after 10pm.
