Peymana Assad

We’re at the Labour conference in Liverpool for this episode with the leader of the party’s Foreign Policy Group, Harrow councillor Peymana Assad.

This year will certainly be one to remember. In the UK, we had three Prime Ministers in just two months and lost the world’s longest reigning monarch. Liz Truss’s ill-fated ‘mini-Budget’ crashed the economy and saw interest rates sky rocket. Beyond our borders, the war in Ukraine began on February 24th and continues unabated. Natural disasters affected large swathes of the world and humanitarian crises deepened.

There is an old refrain that foreign policy is not a doorstep issue. For many, it lives in the realm of high-level summits and photo calls, long diplomatic meetings or embassy drinks parties. It is something that happens over there. But there may now be a growing recognition of just how much ‘the things that happen over there’ affect us here in Britain.
