Embracing the Mystery
Rebecca Auman is a “pragmatic witch” with the most honeyed non-offensive Southern accent you’ve ever heard. She first ensorcelled me on the Deep Dive. I booked a reading faster than you can say “blessed be” and we got on like a house on fire. I interviewed her for my forthcoming book on intuition, and she then interviewed moi on her podcast, Voices in the River, which is medicinal and mindblowing. Cards from my year ahead reading with Rebecca. Pls send help in June and July.

Phil Eil: As Governor Raimondo leaves for Washington, what does it mean to be a leader in this moment?
Twenty new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Rhode Island on Thursday, January 7, the day that Governor Gina Raimondo announced her decision to accept the Biden administration’s nomination for Commerce Secretary. It was a bracing reminder that, for everything else happening in the country, and for all of the chatter and praise that Raimondo’s appointment sparked, Rhode Island is still experiencing a slow-rolling, once-in-a-lifetime disaster.
When Trump -- and Trumpism -- Came to Rhode Island
In April of 2016, Donald Trump, who was then a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, held a campaign rally at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick. Standing in front of four American flags and wearing his signature red tie, the 69-year-old former reality star addressed a “huge” crowd of hundreds of supporters. What followed was a typical Trump speech: a rambling, unfocused, self-aggrandizing, and hateful rant, punctuated frequently with insults.
Rhode Island's Historian Laureate and Unusual Pick
In 2012, the Rhode Island Secretary of State announced that the state’s inaugural Historian Laureate would be the lawyer, developer, and former Providence College professor, Patrick Conley. I remember the announcement well; I wrote a short piece on Conley for the Providence Phoenix to mark the occasion. Conley was, in some ways, a logical choice for the post.
Phil Eil: Rhode Island's Dark History – Uprise RI
“At one point, a notice for a local Klan meeting appeared on the front page of the Woonsocket Call.“ On June 21st, 1924, the Ku Klux Klan held a rally in Foster, Rhode Island. Thousands of people attended from across New England, some traveling in caravans of cars from Newport and New Haven. The day featured speakers from Pennsylvania and Connecticut and female lecturers who specifically addressed the women in attendance.
