A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES
Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, Austria’s Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum has become a bucket-list destination for riders, where Alpine roads, rare machines and sheer passion meet high in the clouds. Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Claudius Crozet Park: A Citizen-founded Adornment for the Village
Backyards, schoolyards, churchyards, vacant lots and cow pastures (better watch where you step!) have long been the go-to places for neighborhood get-togethers, sandlot ball games and the like. But what about an entire village? That takes visionaries, long-range planners and many, many willing helpers. Discussion of plans for a proposed Crozet Community Center took place during a regular session of the Crozet Lions Club on October 14, 1957.
Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Riches from the Memory Banks of our Elders
Thomas E. Marshall III (1915–2014) wrote, at age 96, “I am indebted to [Crozet High School teacher] ‘Miss Minnie’ Jarman Knobloch (1872–1960) for everything I have been able to accomplish in life.” One must realize that those accomplishments included his work for 31 years as a civilian engineer for the Naval Weapons Lab and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Regarding Miss Minnie’s influences, Tom’s younger brother John Q.

Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Hillsboro’s Blue Ridge Rifles
The United States’ tragic Civil War, 1861–1865, was soldiered by several million young men (and older youth) living on one side or the other of a fence that was not necessarily of their own making. National Park Service tallies show the Union Army’s total strength at 2.6 million soldiers spread across four years of war. Conversely, the Confederate Army’s strength was around one million, give or take a quarter-million due to incomplete enlistment records.
Sand bell sleuth
Isle of Wight sand bells discovered in Salisbury Antiques Market. To the left, the front of the sand bells depict Carisbrooke Castle and The Needles, whilst to the right are the reverse sides of both displaying the same distinctive ‘grisaille’ tree design. (© Phil James) In the early 1980s, in a shop window in the Northam Road antiques quarter of Southampton, I spotted a beautiful glass bell filled with coloured sands forming a picture, but the shop was, typically, closed.
Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Larry Lamb: “History Finds Its Keepers”
History isn’t free. Let that sink in for a moment. How’s that, one might ask? Just go to a museum: that’s usually free. Click on the TV and watch documentaries at will, no effort or expense involved, aside from the minimal price of a snack and beverage.

Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Lucy Brown’s Mountain View-Get the Word!
“When you got old enough,” Frances Walker Hill told this writer, “you could go up to Miss Lucy Brown’s Mountain View at Hillsboro, back of Piedmont Baptist Church. She ran a hotel, ballgame diamond, a dance hall, and whatever, you name it. People would come there and stay during the summer. It was a gorgeous place.” Mrs. Lucy Anne Partello (Brown) (1864?–1961) was born in Fulton County, Georgia.
Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Honor to Whom Honor is Due: Paul H. Cale Sr.
“What you say teaches some, what you do teaches more, what you are teaches most.” This motto was espoused by Paul H. Cale Sr. (1909–1987) throughout his public professional life as an educator and administrator. Those who knew him would add that it exemplified his private life as well. Born in North Carolina, Paul was the first of eight children of William F. and Mary V. (Harrell) Cale.
Secrets of the Blue Ridge: Real Country Livin’—Hog Killing Time
“The farmers around White Hall are killing some fine pigs before the ‘moon gets too old,’” the Daily Progress reported in November 1912. “Sausage and scrapple will soon be in evidence.” For those involved in similar community rituals, hog killing time was a memorable event for both young and old. On the Gentry family farm in Mint Springs Valley near Crozet, Lillian Gentry (Kessler, Bondurant) (b.1901), recorded such memories for her loved ones.

QUICK SQUIZ: CFMOTO 675NK
I recently had the chance to take the CFMOTO 675NK for an extended 300km test loop that included motorway stretches, urban traffic, rural B-roads and a few tight, twisty backroads. It’s a great route that quickly reveals a bike’s strengths and weaknesses. So, how did the 675NK naked go? I’ll cut straight to the chase – as a mid-capacity naked, I couldn’t fault it. The Highlights Engine: A real standout.

The ‘Drive for 35’ – Unfinished Business - IER
The ‘Drive for 35’, the fight for a shorter working week by the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions (CSEU) in 1989-91, was a pivotal struggle. Not only did it succeed in reducing weekly working hours from 39 to 37 in the shipbuilding, engineering, automotive and aerospace industries, it established a ‘new normal’ of 37 hours across other sectors. However, it remains unfinished business.
