Uncle Phil’s Picks – Issue 522 of Unique Cars Magazine
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you, and took a break from the sunshine to share what he found. Image: Healey Factory The last of the ‘Big Healeys’ this BJ8 has travelled the world, but now seeks a new custodian. Before the muscle-car boys took over the world, if you had a few quid to spare, a roadster like this Healey was the go. As a young bloke at the time, I can still remember the sight and sound of them belting round the neighbourhood like it was yesterday.
Uncle Phil’s Picks – Issue 521
Every last penny (as it was back then) of my pocket money went on car mags as a kid, staring at beauties like this AC Aceca. Back then we cared about performance, not info-screen sizes. Fully refurbished and hauled up to genuine Cobra spec, it’s packing a real Ford Cobra engine and five-speed gearbox. Cleverly tucked away is air-con, keeping that red Connolly leather and matching wool carpet civilised on a hot day.
Uncle Phil’s Picks – Issue 520 – Kombi, Valiant, Ferrari and more
Dreaming of something fresh in the driveway? We set columnist Phil Walker a monthly mission of trawling through the cars listed on tradeuniquecars.com.au and sharing some of the more collectible classics that catch his eye. Enjoy these ideas from Issue 520 of Unique Cars Magazine. To go straight to the listing, just click on the title of the car. 1964 Volkswagen Kombi. Image: tradeuniquecars.com.au When I was young, these things were everywhere. Beach car parks, picnic spots, the lot.
Uncle Phil’s Picks Issue 519 – FPV Barra, Monaro CV8 + more!
Check out the pick of the pack from Uncle Phil from Issue 519 of Unique Cars Magazine The Barra powered XR6 TURBO has proven itself as a local engineering hero, the FPV version was even more special Sometimes you’re trawling through car ads and history reaches out and grabs you by the scruff of the neck. This is one of those moments. This ute would easily take centre stage in any Ford collection. The BA MKII F6 Tornado raced out of the FPV shed January 2005.
Uncle Phil’s Picks Issue 518 – Corvette, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz
When it comes to tough American muscle, Uncle Phil thinks the 427 powered C2 Corvette is at the top of the ranks. I’m putting my hand in the air and declaring I’ve owned three C2 Corvettes, so I am a little biased and when one gets in my line of sight, I am easily sidetracked. These beasts rarely get to the open market so finding a fully restored, yet highly original, matching-numbers car is harder than winning the lottery.
Uncle Phil’s Picks – Issue 517 – Plymouth, Jaguar, Pantera
Curious why this Plymouth commands such a steep price? It’s one of just 101 A990 Super Stock cars ever built, originally sold only to registered race teams. This particular car keeps its original compliance tag and order number – both confirmed in Darrell Davis’s well-respected guides (included with the sale) along with the build sheet. The exterior is finished in white with a tan interior, and it sports superstock suspension plus American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels for that classic look.
Uncle Phil’s Picks Issue 515: Woodie, Skyline and Impala
In every edition of Unique Cars Magazine our intrepid car loving author Phil Walker takes a look through the sales listings in the magazine and online at tradeuniquecars.com.au to suggest a few great cars that stood out. Remember the movies set in Hawaii in the 1940s and ’50s, with convertible coupes and woodies scattered everywhere? If you want to relive those great days or love motoring nostalgia from this era, this right-hand drive Plymouth may tickle your fancy.
Volkswagen Beetle, Holden Monaro, Citroen 2V – Uncle Phil's Picks Issue 511
The humble VW Beetle is still a crowd favourite and an automotive style icon. 1956 Volkswagen Beetle $60,000 A motoring icon and a car seen on nearly every Aussie driveway at some stage. Simple, reliable and spacious. I remember piling into a mate’s on several occasions and finding many other bods inside. Beetles are still attracting good money and older oval-window examples are highly sought. This one was subject to a recent body off, bare metal respray and looks flash in its new Modern Metal paint.
Uncle Phil's Picks - Issue 510 - Trade Unique Cars
Each edition of Unique Cars Magazine our columnist Phil Walker takes a look through the classifieds and presents his pick of the classics for readers to ponder. What follows is a selection of cars Phil chose, and a bit about why they made the list for that month. 1973 Toyota SWB FJ40 – $33,250 The FJ40 earned icon status with bush-bashers moons ago and in recent times it has struck a chord to a wider audience on the auction scene fetching eye-watering results.

Monaros, HDTs, 350SLCs and more – Phil's Picks
In the collector-car world originality is king, as they say they are only original once. Here’s one for the Holden and Bathurst enthusiasts. A genuine unrestored, matching-numbers HT Monaro with a 350ci V8 and four-speed manual in Sebring Orange. It’s one of 200 ‘Bathurst’ specials. You could say a street-legal race car. It’s body 81 with the unique floor pressings, 25-gallon fuel tank, unique firewall and boot holes, plus original radius rod bracket holes. The paint looks original too.
Chryslers, Escorts, Mustangs and more – Uncle Phil's Picks
This limelight Val will stand out like a glow-worm among the flocks of dull coloured modern vehicles on the road. While everyone goes gaga about the Charger, the Chrysler Regal Hardtop is a rarer beast again with a mere 1067 VJ models made and this survivor looks like a gem. Resplendent in Limelight it has the factory vinyl roof delete option, giving it a touch of class. According to the ad, this was originally a dealer car and it comes with logbooks and documents.
Holdens, Bristols, Porsches and more - Uncle Phil's picks
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you, despite the lousy weather. Here's what he has found. Remember the HQ SS Holden? When I was a young bloke, I really wanted one of these. The SS started life as a Belmont with a V8 and a manual gearbox, and was then tarted up with GTS goodies, stripes were added and it sold like hotcakes. It also kicked off the SS model that ran until Holden production ceased late in 2017.
Fords, Skylines, Valiants and more - Uncle Phil's Picks
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you, despite the lousy weather. Here's what he has found. Whichever way you look at it, the AU Falcon was a flop. But its hastily penned replacement the BA, proved very popular and won Wheels Car of the Year in 2002. Sitting at the top of the heap was the GT, the two most storied letters to sit next to the Falcon badge. This GT is even more special as it wears Build plate number 1. It is from the final year of BA production.
Holdens, Fords, Jaguars + more! - Uncle Phil's picks
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you to enjoy now the weather is on the up. This little box of mystery attached to the firewall makes a difference to the collector. I owned a VK Blue Meanie and while the VL Group A isn’t a patch on it, this VL is the last SS Commodore run that rolled out of Brocky’s HDT Special Vehicles. That makes it significant. Adding to its cache, this is one of 170 Plus Packs made.
Fords, Maseratis, Valiants and more - Uncle Phil's picks
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectibles for you to enjoy now the weather is on the up. SALE: $54,990 Every now and then you stumble across something special. Like this totally original, matching-numbers XD Falcon ute. Under the bonnet rests a 302ci V8 paired with a column auto. What’s more, it has only covered 79,315 klicks. Sno White with contrasting brown vinyl trim, the interior looks new as does the paint.
1972 Datsun 240Z + 1980 Ford Falcon XD + 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo - Phil's Picks
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you to enjoy, now the weather is on the up. $100,000 It’s not standard, but there’s a lot to love about this one I remember clapping my peepers on a Datsun 240Z for the first time at the Melbourne Motor Show. It looked like a Jag E-Type for half the money, but not half the performance. And it elevated the Datsun brand big time here.
Finding Your Destiny by Fixing What is Bothering You
I recently attended a psychology lecture and thought it would be great to share its content on finding your destiny. In the world of social media, there is so much comparison for people, which can be destructive, I think. The Impact of Comparison and Overthinking Very often, we can find ourselves in a place of comparison paralysis. Moreover, even without comparison, overthinking what this big thing we need to do may be and consequently not really doing anything at all.
1968 Morris Cooper S MK + 1976 Holden Sandman + 2003 HSV Coupe V2 III - Phil's Picks
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you to enjoy, now the weather is on the up. They say red goes faster... $64,950 These pesky things were the bane of a young bloke’s life in the sixties, as the boys in blue used them as highway pursuit cars. Here’s a matching-numbers, Australian-built 1968 Mk1 with its original 1275cc engine. Finished in Sandown Red, it also has its original dealer ID plate in the engine bay. A fair degree of history has been preserved in this car.
1967 Jaguar 340 MKII + 1966 Chevrolet Impala + 1995 Mitsubishi GTO - Phils Picks #488
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you to enjoy, now the weather is on the up. True Brit, with grace, space and pace $39,900 Watch any pommy cop show or TV series and one or more of these will infiltrate the screen at some point, guaranteed. A genuine sports luxo model, the advertising slogan used was Grace, Space and Pace.
1956 Ford Customline + 1968 Lancia Fulvia + 1987 Toyota MR2 + MORE! - Phils's Picks #487
Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you to enjoy, now the weather is on the up. Who would have thought a Customline could be found with a genuine 20,201 miles on the clock? Well, here it is. The two-door, with its unique body mouldings was never brought to Australia by Ford Aus, just the sedan, which my Dad owned. But I wish he’d had this stunning pillarless coupe.
Therapy to help the process of ‘crossing the rainbow bridge’.
I’m in the process of re reading this book. It was a gift a few years ago from a good friend of mine and I thought I’d revisit it. It’s interesting when you read a book again and different parts may hit you more, I guess when you’re just at a slightly different point in life. This time what was really striking was the idea of ‘crossing the rainbow bridge’.
Journal writing to be with and find yourself.
Journal writing is something I’ve done so much over the years. I’ve written about it lots on various forums too. I admit sometimes I slip out of it personally. It tends to be something I get passionate about for a real set course of time then keep dipping back into. I first learned about it as a self-connection practice when I had a lot of Counselling myself many years ago. It’s really something worth thinking about.
Jordan Peterson and Richard Dawkins discussions
With my background in therapy I admit I have been a fan of Jordan Peterson. I actually saw him speak in Auckland when I was here. I’d always been a bit mixed on Richard Dawkins as I found his style somewhat glib so to speak and as if it was always missing something.
Wes Hall: ‘I’m a West Indian, man. I’m a West Indian. To the bone’
The fastest bowler of his day, Hall was the shimmering spearhead of the first truly great West Indies team. But that’s not the half of it By Phil Walker for Wisden Cricket Monthly This is a story about a man, and men, and what it means to embody something bigger than yourself. It’s about the ephemeral nature of things, and how we memorialise those precious fragments of legend, lest we lose them for good. It’s about a beautiful idea, and the islands around which that beautiful idea once coalesced.
1972 Ford Falcon XA GT + 1966 Mustang Fastback + 1954 Austin Healey
Unrestored and unmolested is this three-owner, matching numbers XA GT that’s ready for some TLC. Its first owner went berserk when he clapped eyes on the options list, ticking the vinyl roof, radio/tape player, quarter vents, T-Bar FMX auto, Detroit Locker 9" diff and the dealer-fit under- dash aircon. Its 351ci 4V V8 has been well cared for and it has many of its original components.

1965 Ford Mustang + 1987 BMW M3 E30 + 1968 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham - Phil's Picks #485
Uncle Phil has been seeking out the best and sometimes left-field classics for you to enjoy on the road and tinker with in the shed. Here’s a ’65 Mustang with a twist, that makes it stand out from the pack. Because under the bonnet lies a straight-six, not a bent eight. This ’65 Cherry Red Mustang with Wimbledon white and red interior, has been restored and enhanced, as a project by a father and son.
1975 Holden Sandman HJ + 1983 Mercedes 380SEC + 2017 HSV GTS Gen-F2 - Phil's Picks #484
Uncle Phil has been seeking out the best and sometimes left-field classics for you to enjoy on the road and tinker with in the shed. Those clever folk at Holden thought that if they grab a basic tradie van, and tart it up a bit, it might lure young buyers. It worked a treat. The Sandman was a landmark model for the General and highly sought today. This XX7 plated example has a matching-number 253ci V8 mated to a four-speed manual box.
2013 Porsche Boxster + 1974 Ford Falcon XB GT + 1955 Ford Thunderbird - Phil's Picks #483
Uncle Phil has been seeking out the best and sometimes left-field classics for you to enjoy on the road and tinker with in the shed With the weather on the up, it’s open-top motoring time. I’ve had a few Boxsters over the years and reckon they are bees knees. This 981 Boxster S has the best combo of the 3436cc engine and six-speed manual. It’s sure to turn heads finished in black with red leather trim and smart looking 20-inch Carrera wheels.

1971 XY Fairmont + 2010 Aston Martin DB9 + 1965 Ford Mustang: Phil's Picks #482
Uncle Phil has been seeking out the best and sometimes left-field classics for you to enjoy on the road and tinker with in the shed If you seek rarity, this is your car. This is the car that Jack drove. Brabham that is, his personal XY Falcon. If you’re after rareness with motorsport royalty, this is the one. After retiring from racing Jack Brabham established Jack Brabham Ford in suburban Sydney. Soon after he created this XY, dubbed the Jack Brabham Special of which 50 were made.

RS800 European Championships 2023 at Circolo Vela Torbole, Lake Garda, Italy - Day 3 Original
RS800 European Championships 2023 at Circolo Vela Torbole, Lake Garda, Italy - Day 3 by Phil Walker 31 May 22:22 BST After a crazy hail storm the night before to further cool down the water and with many nursing sore heads from the crew vs helm dinner, there was only time for one race on the third day of the RS800 Europeans. In typical Garda fashion, about 30 seconds after the start, 95% of the fleet were on port heading towards the cliffs on the right.
