Let's Be Very Clear: The Real Fraud Is DOGE
— from Inequality.org Donald Trump and Elon Musk keep claiming that their scorched-earth approach to remaking the federal government is made necessary by the prevalence of fraud and waste. Musk’s DOGE attack-squad tabulates its progress on a Wall of Receipts that currently purports to have saved Uncle Sam $65 billion. That number appears to have been plucked out of thin air. The savings for the 2,300 individual contracts listed on the site add up to only $9.6 billion, and even that amount is shaky.

Reposted from Dirt Diggers Digest, a blog that chronicles corporate misbehavior by Good Jobs First’s Violation Tracker Project Director Philip Mattera. Violation Tracker Global has arrived. The new database, covering corporate crime and misconduct in 45 countries, is free to search at violationtrackerglobal.goodjobsfirst.org.
The High Cost of Misconduct: Corporate Penalties Reach the Trillion-Dollar Mark
Regulatory fines, criminal penalties, and class-action settlements paid by corporations in the United States since 2000 have now surpassed $1 trillion. Total payouts for corporate misconduct grew from around $7 billion per year in the early 2000s to more than $50 billion annually in recent years, according to a new report by Good Jobs First. This amounts to a seven-fold increase in current dollars — a 300% increase in constant dollars.
Conspiring Against Competition: Illegal Corporate Price-Fixing in the U.S. Economy
Large companies operating in the United States have, since the beginning of 2000, paid $96 billion in fines and settlements to resolve allegations of covert price-fixing and related anti-competitive practices in violation of antitrust laws. Illegal pricing conspiracies have occurred in a wide range of industries, affecting the cost of products ranging from everyday grocery items and auto parts to chemicals and electronic components.
Opinion | Democrats Failed to Understand the Fundamentals of Collective Bargaining for Railway Workers
Railways owned by the mega-rich racked up huge penalties for mistreatment of workers in the years leading up to the current labor dispute. The Biden Administration and Congressional Democrats purport to be pro-union, but in their desperation to prevent a rail strike they fail to understand something fundamental about collective bargaining: Sometimes workers have to inconvenience the public in order to achieve their legitimate goals.

Cleveland Browns signing QB Josh Rosen to 1-year deal
The Cleveland Browns are signing former first-round pick Josh Rosen to a one-year deal, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday. Rosen, the No. 10 pick in the 2018 draft, last played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2021, completing 2 of 11 passes with two interceptions. The Browns, who face the possibility that starter Deshaun Watson could be suspended under the NFL’s personal conduct policy, are looking to enter training camp with four quarterbacks.
The Phony Feud Between Republicans and Big Business
When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis struck back at Disney for declining to support his culture war demagoguery, some observers were quick to see this as evidence of a supposed rift between the Republican Party and big business.
Price Gouging
Many of the increasingly clamorous inflation hawks are convinced that the main culprits behind the recent rise in prices are Congressional Democrats and the Biden Administration. Other observers point to supply chain problems or escalating wage demands. Yet there has been surprisingly little focus on the parties responsible for actually setting most of the prices: large corporations.
The State of Environmental Enforcement
Climate change is the most pressing environmental issue of our time, but we still have to contend with plenty of air pollution, water contamination and hazardous waste proliferation. That task will be easier now that the EPA is abandoning the lax practices of the Trump Administration and is once again getting serious about enforcement. Yet the federal agency will not be taking on the challenge by itself.
Covid Contracts and the Fraudsters
If you needed a plumber or a caterer, you would avoid a service provider who had in the past tried to bill you for work not performed or grossly overcharged for what was completed. The Trump Administration takes a different approach. In selecting contractors to provide the goods and services the federal government needs to deal with the pandemic, it has turned to dozens of corporations with a history of cheating Uncle Sam.
The Corporate Marauder Undermining the Postal Service
Donald Trump got elected in part by selling the idea that his business experience would enable him to do a great job of running the government. We see how that turned out. And now we have another veteran of the private sector wreaking havoc on the United States Postal Service. Louis DeJoy was named postmaster general after spending four decades in the trucking and logistics business, becoming wealthy enough in the process to join the ranks of Republican megadonors.
UBS: Corporate Rap Sheet
UBS, the result of the 1998 marriage of two giant Swiss banks and the subsequent acquisition of the U.S. brokerage house PaineWebber, has been embroiled in a series of recent scandals involving its role in helping wealthy Americans evade taxes, its role in the manipulation of the LIBOR interest rate index and its failure to prevent one of its traders from running up more than $2 billion in losses.
Vax | The Mirror Project
Pfizer made itself the largest pharmaceutical company in the world in large part by purchasing its competitors. In the last dozen years it has carried out three mega-acquisitions: Warner-Lambert in 2000, Pharmacia in 2003, and Wyeth in 2009. Then, in 2015, Pfizer announced a $160 billion deal to merge with Allergan and move its headquarters to Ireland to avoid U.S. taxes but subsequently had to abandon the plan.
