1 Introduction Spatial and temporal autoregressive models have become increasingly popular for analyzing spatiotemporal data in various fields in recent years. The analysis of such data requires accounting for spatial and temporal dependencies which are modelled by spatiotemporal autoregressive models (Cressie 2015). A fundamental element of these models is the incorporation of a spatial weights matrix, , that characterizes relationships between different spatial units (Anselin 1988).

Simple Yet Effective: A Comparative Study of Statistical Models for Yearly Hurricane Forecasting

1 Introduction In this article, we investigate the complex problem of forecasting the yearly number of hurricanes. For hurricanes, we intend a tropical cyclone in the Atlantic or East Pacific Oceans with winds exceeding 74 mph (64 knots, 33 meters per second, see WMO 1993). Forecasting the frequency of hurricanes is crucial, especially because the average number of hurricanes occurring each year is increasing over time (Burn and Palmer 2015; Sazcha and Christopher 2019).
