The Sun’s Phoebe Cook visited Broadstairs – here’s what she thought: We're climbing up Broadstairs' Eastern Esplanade, where our boutique hotel rests atop chalk cliffs towering over the Channel. Speaking in the House of Lords yesterday, energy efficiency minister Martin Callanan brought an end to months of speculation when he announced that a plan to ramp up heat pump installation targets would go ahead on April 1, despite intense lobbying.

This is the second of two articles that focus on the systems thinking behind the economic transformation I am advocating. It was originally published on The Alternative, for which the link is here. The idea that we need to transform the economic system in order to avoid environmental catastrophe is growing in popularity.
Grappling with the Great Unraveling
I write in the quirky coffee shop, aware of my twitchy fingers and buzzy mind from the caffeine dose I ingested. My little table sits alongside a huge glass garage door. This shop is a repurposed Jiffy Lube. Where car mechanics once drained and refilled motor oil, now workers of the information age drain and refill coffee-themed beverages.
Revealed: Media Blitz Against Heat Pumps Funded by Gas Lobby Group
An energy trade association that represents and promotes gas boilers and manufacturers is behind a barrage of negative press attacking heat pumps, DeSmog has learned. Over the past two years, the Energy and Utilities Association (EUA) has paid a public affairs firm to generate hundreds of articles and interviews to lobby the UK government on energy policy. The PR campaign subjects heat pumps to intense criticism.

Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change
Though, ‘Overshoot’, is ostensibly a book about biophysical limits, the theme that runs through it is about the human propensity for denying obvious facts: Our ability to deceive not only others, but more importantly, ourselves. As with the first review in this four-part miniseries, ‘Farewell to Growth’ (2007), any book that posits the ‘end of affluence’ will inevitably attract the misanthrope, and their arch-enemy, the Cornucopian.

A Stranded Society: Fossil Fuel Infrastructure in a Post-Carbon World
Believe it or not, the fossil fuel industry used to be considered a bad investment. This is hard to believe in 2023, with the sector accruing gigantic profits on the back of the global energy crisis. As supplies tighten, profits increase and the expectation that oil and gas investments were stranded assets — destined to collapse against the rise of renewables — seems like a half-remembered dream. Firstly, what is a ?
Love Island, Big Brother is watching you.
Love it, hate it, pretend to hate it during the day and then secretly watch it at night. Reality TV seems to have a hold over the nation of TV watchers, with an invisible force of attraction that drags us back time and time again to see what it has in store this time. Defined as having low production value, high emotions, cheap antics and questionable ethics, reality TV content still manages to rake in a sizable amount of screentime from viewers.
