Romance Loans in Middel Dutch and Middel English: Retained or Lost? A Matter of Metre1

1 Introduction Word stress in all West Germanic (WGmc) languages (e.g. Dutch, English and German) has undoubtedly been affected by loans from Romance (largely Latin and Old French, cf. Lahiri & Dresher 1999; Lahiri 2015 for an overview). Synchronically, comparing Germanic words with Romance loans, we find that there is considerable variation in stress. Table 1 gives examples of corresponding Romance and Germanic words in modern day Dutch, English and German.
