Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I own three, though they mostly work when they feel like it.
How is social media changing news?
Clicks rule the space, so headlines are getting less descriptive and more uniform ("5 Reasons Why Blah Is Blah," "You Won't Believe Blah...")
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Spider Jerusalem, from Warren Ellis' Vertigo comic Transmetropolitan. Think Hunter S. Thompson meets William Gibson.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means being depressed most of the time, and doing the job anyway.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I like the pitcher to have either a solid idea of what they want or be willing to let a seed germinate into something more.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
I was followed by Tay Zonday recently. So, bucket list complete.
Why did you become a journalist?
I very much see the role as a "social detective," tracking down the clues of a story to figure out the big picture.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not, no. I was squeezed out for going too deep into the secrets of the meatloaf surprise.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote a story on Nebraska farmers rallying to protest sandhills development a few years ago I'm very fond of.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
There's going to be a lot of work, especially in the beginning, you're not going to like. Bear in mind that it will follow you.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Guardian, Mother Jones
