1. Introduction Globally, biodiversity loss and climate change have become enormous challenges that will affect the future of humanity and the entire biosphere. However, the role of forests is partly contradictory. For example, forests can be utilised as a source of renewable resources to decrease the use of fossil-fuel-based materials but simultaneously play a vital role in the global carbon cycle as a carbon sink [1].
