Assembly and Functional Coordination of Two Families of Metabolic Organelles in Salmonella
1 Introduction Compartmentalization of metabolic pathways is fundamental for the regulation of cellular metabolism and energy flow in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells (Cornejo et al. 2014; Liu 2022). While eukaryotes employ membrane-bound organelles to perform specific metabolic functions (Van Meer et al. 2008), many bacteria have evolved protein-based organelles, known as bacterial microcompartments (BMCs), to sequester metabolic pathways from the cytosol (Axen et al. 2014; Liu et al. 2021).

Future extreme precipitation amplified by intensified mesoscale moisture convergence - Nature Geoscience
|
Abstract Extreme precipitation events are driven by complex multiscale atmospheric dynamic interactions, fuelled by available moisture. They are expected to intensify with climate change, posing increasing risks to human communities and ecosystems. However, current low-resolution climate models struggle to accurately represent key extreme precipitation-generating phenomena, limiting our ability to generate robust and reliable future projections.

The material was designed to effectively seal small coal pillars and their adjacent fracture networks in abandoned mine areas, thereby achieving synergistic prevention and control of both gas explosion hazards and coal spontaneous combustion.
Role of Midwater Mixed Waves in the Loop Current Separation Events From a Coupled Ocean‐Atmosphere Regional Model and In Situ Observations
1 Introduction The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is an important ocean system because of its abundant natural resources and large surrounding populations from three countries. To take advantage of these rich resources effectively, it is necessary to understand the circulation system of the GoM (Sturges & Lugo-Fernández, 2005). Advancing the understanding of the circulation in the GoM benefits all of the Gulf Coast economies and communities.

Molecular basis of the biogenesis of a protein organelle for ethanolamine utilization
Abstract Many pathogenic bacteria use proteinaceous ethanolamine-utilization microcompartments (Eut BMCs) to facilitate the catabolism of ethanolamine, an abundant nutrient in the mammalian gut. The ability to metabolize ethanolamine gives pathogens a competitive edge over commensal microbiota which can drive virulence in the inflamed gut. Despite their critical functions, the molecular mechanisms underlying the synthesis of Eut BMCs in bacterial cells remain elusive.
Uncovering the roles of the scaffolding protein CsoS2 in mediating the assembly and shape of the α-carboxysome shell
Abstract Carboxysomes are proteinaceous organelles featuring icosahedral protein shells that enclose the carbon-fixing enzymes, Rubisco, alone with carbonic anhydrase. The intrinsically disordered scaffolding protein CsoS2 plays a vital role in the construction of α-carboxysomes through bridging the shell and cargo enzymes.
High-resolution modelling identifies the Bering Strait’s role in amplified Arctic warming - Nature Climate Change
Abstract The Arctic region has warmed nearly four times faster than the global average since 1979, with far-reaching global implications. However, model projections of Arctic warming rates are uncertain and one key component is the ocean heat transport (OHT) into the Arctic Ocean. Here we use high-resolution historical and future climate simulations to show that the OHT through the Bering Strait exerts a more substantial influence on Arctic warming than previously recognized.
Quality monitoring during sufu fermented process and establishment of random forest prediction model
Microscopic, mechanical, physiochemical and color changes of sufu during fermentation (10d, 20d, 30d, 40d, 50d, 60d) were analyzed to predict sufu quality objectively and accurately. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the absorption peaks at 702 cm-1, 1454 cm-1, 1652 cm-1, 2926 cm-1 and 3281 cm-1 increased in intensity, and sufu was altered from a granular colloidal protein structure to a smooth and uniform shape.

Role of the Maritime Continent in the remote influence of Atlantic Niño on the Pacific - Nature Communications
Abstract Atlantic Niño, the dominant climate mode in the equatorial Atlantic, is known to remotely force a La Niña-like response in the Pacific, potentially affecting seasonal climate predictions. Here, we use both observations and large-ensemble simulations to explore the physical mechanisms linking the Atlantic to the Pacific. Results indicate that an eastward propagating atmospheric Kelvin wave from the Atlantic, through the Indian Ocean, to the Pacific is the primary pathway.
Author Correction: Split westerlies over Europe in the early Little Ice Age - Nature Communications
Correction to: Nature Communications https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-022-32654-w, published online 20 August 2022 The original version of this Article contained an error in Fig. 3, in which the uncertainty of the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability index was included as an orange trend line labelled with the letter ‘g’. This index however was found to be not linked to the findings of this study and has been removed. This has been corrected in both the PDF and HTML versions of the Article.
Uncertain future of sustainable fisheries environment in eastern boundary upwelling zones under climate change - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Upwelling along ocean eastern boundaries is expected to intensify due to coastal wind strengthening driven by increasing land-sea contrast according to the Bakun hypothesis. Here, the latest high-resolution climate simulations that exhibit drastic improvements of upwelling processes reveal far more complex future upwelling changes.

Ocean fronts and eddies force atmospheric rivers and heavy precipitation in western North America
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are responsible for over 90% of poleward water vapor transport in the mid-latitudes and can produce extreme precipitation when making landfall. However, weather and climate models still have difficulty simulating and predicting landfalling ARs and associated extreme precipitation, highlighting the need to better understand AR dynamics.
Maintenance of mid-latitude oceanic fronts by mesoscale eddies
Abstract Oceanic fronts associated with strong western boundary current extensions vent a vast amount of heat into the atmosphere, anchoring mid-latitude storm tracks and facilitating ocean carbon sequestration. However, it remains unclear how the surface heat reservoir is replenished by ocean processes to sustain the atmospheric heat uptake.
