Spitting differences: Men, women differ in salivary flow
Women typically have significantly lower salivary flow than men, which increases their predisposition to certain oral diseases and negatively impacts their quality of life, according to researchers from the University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Dental Medicine. Further, the differences, largely ignored until now, should be accounted for when treating women patients both to ensure they don't reach critically low levels and for treating men and women for oral health diseases.
Does fluoride cause a decrease in IQ? A dentist says what he believes really matters
We live in a powerful information age. No matter what side of any issue you are on, your opinion can be "validated" by finding like-minded support on the internet and in the media. Human nature gravitates toward information supporting our opinion because we want to be right and we connect being right to our self-worth. An attack on our opinion feels like an attack on our very existence, so it should be no surprise that our country is more divided on so many issues like never before.

Manual toothbrushes with specific features like cross-angle bristles combined with brushing using the modified Bass method may be the most effective method for removing plaque and reducing gingivitis. Alcohol-free mouthwash may taste better but cuts less plaque
Although preferred for taste, an alcohol-free, essential oils-containing mouthwash may be less effective at controlling plaque than alcohol-based versions, according to a systematic review published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene. However, an essential oils mouthwash without alcohol (EOalc−) and an essential oils mouthwash with alcohol (EOalc+) show similar results for reducing gingival bleeding and gingivitis, the authors wrote.

Digital mirror reflections: The lack of evolution with the dental mouth mirror
Dentistry is a dynamic and ever-changing profession, where innovation is the cornerstone of progress, seen throughout the care and practice in totality, except for one seemingly humble tool that has defied change for more than a century: the much-relied-upon and heavily used dental mouth mirror. The dental mirror is everywhere, from its centuries-old roots to its modern-day ubiquity. It's used daily, always, in every practice.

Spurred on by this assertion from a senior South African ECD, MarkLives is looking to nudge the industry into constructively engaging with the subject.

Cocktails with Peter Khoury, Chronicler Extraordinaire on Apple Podcasts
52 min Over the past two decades, you may have seen Peter Khoury at table seven or maybe Orso, but you were most likely to see him at Bar Centrale, sipping a whiskey at the bar and trading stories with The Man himself. This week, Peter shares a few anecdotes and explains why he’s drawn to authentically old school haunts like Joe’s, Bar Centrale, and Elaine’s. We recorded this shortly after Joe’s passing so it’s a bit of a tribute to The Man and the legacy he leaves behind.
Remembering Joe Allen, Who Fed Broadway in Untheatrical Style

Sydney petrol prices falling slower than a wet week
Sydney’s Christmas and New Year period has been characterised by wet weather and a snail’s pace fall in petrol prices with analysis conducted by the NRMA showing prices falling only one cent a day – one third the rate that prices have increased. The average price of regular unleaded has fallen 22 cents per litre over the last 22 days. Prior to reaching the high-point of the last cycle prices increased at almost three cents per litre a day.

Memories of Elaine: An Appreciation
Paul Hawthorne/Getty Images Elaine Kaufman in 2004. One Saturday night this spring, a limber woman eating dinner at Elaine’s walked up to Table 4, bent very low, and reached out her hand to pay her respects to the imposing woman seated there. The limber woman was Jane Fonda; the imposing one, Elaine Kaufman.
Missing Those Old Familiar Places
Takeout and delivery are fine, but there’s no substitute for getting to eat and drink inside your favorite New York City restaurants and bars. Empty establishments, like this bar in Brooklyn, have New Yorkers longing for a time when they can actually walk into an establishment and eat and drink inside. OK, I’ve finally gone around the bend. I’m sitting in my Manhattan studio and listening to the “Colonel Bogey March” from “The Bridge on the River Kwai” on YouTube.
A Beloved Neighbor Leaves the Building
An Illinois farm boy who came to New York to be a singer left an indelible mark on the Upper West Side co-op where he lived for more than six decades. Charles Dunn, a farm boy from Illinois who came to New York after World War II and pursued a career in singing, died on Feb. 1 at 99. There’s a void in my Upper West Side co-op. There’s no piano playing coming from the apartment directly above my ground-floor unit. No deep, reassuring bass-baritone. I miss that voice.
The Long, Complicated Road to Nationals Fever
essay For older Washington fans, baseball came and went — for a long time. A Times editor who grew up in Washington reflects on the old teams and developing passion for the Nationals. Don Rickles at Elaine’s, a Recurring Act
Don Rickles leaned over our table at Elaine’s and pointed at an attractive blonde. “Are you a hooker?!” he asked. The whole group — a couple of actors, a comedian (the blonde), Elaine Kaufman and I — broke into laughter. Mr. Rickles, who grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens, and died Thursday at age 90, often dined at Elaine’s when he was in New York. As a regular at the Upper East Side restaurant, which closed in 2011, I was lucky enough to have met him there several times.
Elaine’s Restaurant Expatriate in Post-Elaine’s Manhattan
Elaine Kaufman at Elaine's in 2003, on the last night smoking was allowed in city restaurants (Alain Genestar, a journalist, in background). EVERY few Saturdays I take a walk from my home on the Upper West Side that leads me across Central Park, past the upscale shops along Madison Avenue and over to Second Avenue north of 88th Street. I duck into a nondescript Thai restaurant named Osha, sit down and order the chicken curry lunch special.
4-Pillars of Public Speaking Confidence
When confronted with public speaking fear or anxiety – working on your most valuable asset – your confidence- becomes essential. Your confidence is the foundation of your delivery skills and content. It doesn’t matter if you know all the content in the world or if you are practiced in all the delivery skills possible, and you can’t stand in front of the room and share with an audience. I had to deal with public speaking fear myself. I know that sometimes you feel powerless against it.
All of Broadway’s a Stage
Whenever I eat at Joe Allen, a mainstay at 326 West 46th Street in the theater district, I can’t help being reminded of the attachment I have developed to the area. As I try to decide between the chicken sandwich and the meatloaf, my attention inevitably turns to the front of the menu, which includes a simple map of Broadway’s theaters.
