Citizen Science Reveals Unexpected Continental-Scale Evolutionary Change in a Model Organism
Organisms provide some of the most sensitive indicators of climate change and evolutionary responses are becoming apparent in species with short generation times. Large datasets on genetic polymorphism that can provide an historical benchmark against which to test for recent evolutionary responses are very rare, but an exception is found in the brown-lipped banded snail (Cepaea nemoralis).
Red Carotenoid Coloration in the Zebra Finch Is Controlled by a Cytochrome P450 Gene Cluster
Ketocarotenoids Are Absent in the Beak of yellowbeak Birds Yellowbeak Maps to a Narrow Region of Chromosome 8 Containing Candidate Ketolase Genes Yellowbeak Is Associated with a Deletion of a CYP2J2-like Locus CYP2J19 Loci Are Specifically Expressed in Ketocarotenoid-Containing Tissues, and Bill Expression Is Greatly Reduced in yellowbeak In wild-type birds, we detected expression of CYP2J19 loci in the beak, tarsus, and retina, which are all sites of ketocarotenoid deposition, but not in the...

How Should Beta-Diversity Inform Biodiversity Conservation?
the species diversity of a relatively small area, frequently expressed as species richness or other low-order Hill number [29] . For the purposes of this review, alpha-diversity corresponds to the scales at which biodiversity studies commonly make measurements (i.e., diversity of a quadrat, plot, or study site). the component of gamma-diversity (see below) that accumulates as a result of differences between sites.
"Distinct and Cooperative Activities of HESO1 and URT1 Nucleotidyl Tran" by Bin Tu, Li Liu et al.
3’ uridylation is increasingly recognized as a conserved RNA modification process associated with RNA turnover in eukaryotes. 2’-O-methylation on the 3’ terminal ribose protects micro(mi)RNAs from 3’ truncation and 3’ uridylation in Arabidopsis. Previously, we identified HESO1 as the nucleotidyl transferase that uridylates most unmethylated miRNAs in vivo, but substantial 3’ tailing of miRNAs still remains in heso1 loss-of-function mutants.
Global Patterns of Extinction Risk in Marine and Non-marine Systems
Despite increasing concern over the effects of human activities on marine ecosystems [ 1, 2 ], extinction in the sea remains scarce: 19–24 out of a total of >850 recorded extinctions [ 3, 4 ] implies a 9-fold lower marine extinction rate compared to non-marine systems. The extent of threats faced by marine systems, and their resilience to them, receive considerable attention [ 2, 4–6 ], but the detectability of marine extinctions is less well understood.
