What was your first job as a journalist?
My first writing assignment was a piece for Time Out New York Kids, but my first job was as the assistant to the managing editor at TONY.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! I worked for a book publisher in college (doing customer service) that used one for all correspondence. And this was in 2001.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Always, always through e-mail. I look at every pitch I receive; timely, interesting/new stories about NYC are best!
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter for laughs and for keeping up with breaking news; but I also love looking through my friends' photos on Instagram.
Why did you become a journalist?
I love digging deep into a topic and finding a way to bring the story to a larger audience. I'm also a total word nerd and love editing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the Arts & Entertainment editor and wrote op-eds, including one that the nuns at my Catholic school deemed too controversial to run.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I had the most fun interviewing Daniel Radcliffe for a Time Out New York cover story in 2011.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read as much as you can on a wide variety of topics. Keep writing in whatever form possible. Always be open to learning new skills.
