The remarkable ability of axons to grow following neonatal spinal cord injury has been described previously in the opossum {1} and in mice {2,3}. Li, He, Kawaguchi et al. now demonstrate that this depends not only on intrinsic neuronal growth potential, but on the wound-healing response at the site of injury. Foetal and neonatal wound healing is characterised as 'scarless' in some other organs and tissues, dependent on inflammation and extracellular matrix remodelling.
