Shane Chartrand Looks to Become the Top Chef
Shane Chartrand’s home address may be in Sherwood Park, but he’s become a global ambassador for Indigenous cooking. He presented on Indigenous food and healing at the COP27 Conference in Egypt — the United Nations-sponsored event on climate change. He just finished a stint cooking in Chicago. Soon, he’s off to the famous Inn at Bay Fortune in Prince Edward Island, to join renowned chefs Michael Smith and Michael Hunter.
Devon Dining: Crave Appetite
As quaint small-town Main Streets go, you can’t do much better in the area than Devon’s tree-lined Athabasca Avenue. And, at one end of this stroll-able strip, you’ll find Crave Appetite. The Devon location opened its doors this past spring. But, if you’ve been to Vegreville, Crave Appetite has been a fixture there for almost half a decade. The menu concept is comfort food, with modern twists.
The pARTy Starts Now
Finding DH ARTWorld on Fort Road can be tough. It’s an old manufacturing/storage space, in a nondescript white block building. But inside, you’ll find a workshop and gallery inhabited by artist Dana Holst. This month, Holst and co-curator Jill Davies-Shaw are hosting pARTy, an exhibition featuring the works of some of their friends, from local creators to artists based in the United States. And, if you can make it out to the opening event the afternoon of Sept.
Hearts a Meltin’ for the Arts
A typical Edmonton alleyway becomes a cozy venue for local jazz musicians. A balcony that’s just a balcony the other 362 days of the year turns into a stage for an Italian opera singer. A lamppost converts into a canvas on which community artists go wild. And a patch of grass hosts tipis, campfires, and Indigenous artists for the weekend. “People don’t even recognize 118 Avenue,” says Christy Morin, executive director for Arts on the Ave, who runs the Kaleido Family Arts Festival.

Shop Around the Corner: Rogue Wave Coffee
Rose, nectarine and sweet cream, or Bourbon Natural with apricot, pineapple and cherry might sound like tasting notes discussed in a high-end liquor store. But at Rogue Wave Coffee Roasters, a whole team is working to source unique coffees for the cafe. You can try these varieties at the pour-over tasting bar or take them home. A full roastery runs in the back of the shop supplying wholesale and subscription bags of roasted coffee for purchase.
How to Give the Gift of Life
Beau Walter was critically injured in a car accident in 2022. His mom Carrah Walter consented to donating his organs and tissues, dramatically changing the quality of life of at least 40 people. More than 4,500 Canadians are waiting for life-saving organ transplants, nearly 300 of whom are in Alberta. Many more are waiting for life-changing tissue transplants. “People with organ failure are, of course, in pretty desperate need of an organ,” Andreas Kramer, medical director of Give Life Alberta said.
Mike Sobel Reflects on TV Life
If there was a candidate for “Mr. Edmonton,” Mike Sobel would be right up there. Even though he’s now semi-retired, Sobel has become such a fixture on our TV screens, from hosting cartoon shows and rock-video programs, to 25 years of work on the Global Morning News. The velvety voice. The unflappable smile. And, as Global Edmonton, previously ITV, celebrates its 50 anniversary this weekend, Sobel looked back on his first day in front of a camera, and how fortune smiled on him. It was the 1980s.
A Portrait of the Architect Who Came From Iran
Vahid Mortazavi is no ordinary architect. When you look at the Mortazavi-made, ultra-modern homes sprouting in Edmonton (and Calgary), you’re gazing upon the vision of a man who once designed a subway station that doubles as a war shelter. When I walk into Ottewell’s Anvil Coffee House, I spot Mortazavi almost at once. He’s wearing a flat cap and a neatly pressed button-up shirt, exuding an air of calm and confidence.
Oil’s Well that Ends… Well?
And if you lost a lot of sleep because you can’t stop thinking about Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, you’re certainly not alone. Not only did the Oilers come up just one win short of hockey’s holy grail, they came up short by one stinking goal. But, there’s always next season, right? And now, we’re into next season. Training camp opens this month. The Oilers have a new general manager in Stan Bowman, and have added some key players, such as forwards Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner.
The Marc 2.0 | Edify.
Timing is never perfect, but Jillian Fonteyne and Scott Downey doubled down when they had a second child, a little boy they welcomed last November — and took on a second restaurant in the spring of 2024. The owners of The Butternut Tree expanded their family by purchasing The Marc from Patrick and Doris Saurette. The Saurettes are retiring after running The Marc since 2010, and Il Portico before that.
The Myer Horowitz Makeover
At the University of Alberta standing centre stage inside the newly renovated Myer Horowitz Theatre, Marc Dumouchel recalls taking a water balloon to the face in this exact spot 34 years ago during a student election forum. “I thought it was the best possible thing that could have happened to me,” he says, looking at the empty theatre. Luckily, the water balloon was a dud, bounced off without breaking, and Dumouchel didn’t skip a beat in his speech.
Palm Springs, Edmonton
This home’s been renovated a lot in the last four years, but instead of a modern makeover, owner Jesse Raimondi has turned it into a testament to the very best of mid-century modern style. You’ll walk in to see a swag light hanging in the corner. It’s activated by antique-style, push-button switches — the same as all the lights in the house — and sits above a wood-sideboard cabinet (with a plastic-dome record player on it) next to a green fiberglass chair and a grey tufted couch.
Relax in the Parallax
Aiden Schurek doesn’t remember doesn’t remember the first time he went to K-Days as a kid, but the Next Architecture junior architectural technologist remembers the early impact the carnival made. “It all felt so big, especially at night with all the lights,” he says.
New and Notable: Lawson’s British Fish & Chips
I think the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten was in London, from a food truck. I was in Shepherd’s Bush, had just seen Bonnie Prince Billy play the Empire, and the late-night snack ticked every stereotypical box. Wrapped in newspaper? Check. Greasy? As all hell. Stupidly overpriced? Come on, I was in London — of course. Outside of England, I’ve been to a few fish-and-chip places I’d consider decent to good, but nothing ever got to London levels.
Guerrilla Chainsaw Art
Artist Tim Kurucz sends me a text saying he’s available for an interview at any point AS LONG AS THE OILERS AREN’T PLAYING. It’s written just like that with the last words all in caps. LET’S GO OILERS, dings the next text. Granted, the same refrain rings across the city. At the time of writing, the Oilers are about to (almost) make one of the greatest hockey come backs in the history of the playoffs. Within days, the City’s collective excitement is as palpable as Kurucz’s.
The Island Escape
Even though Scott Dodds had been a bartender for more than 20 years, he was unfamiliar with tiki bars and drinks until he visited Tiki Tolteca in New Orleans in 2017. It had all the hallmarks of an authentic tiki bar: bamboo and thatch decor, smells of fresh citrus and spices, breezy music filling the air, and intricate cocktails served in fun mugs. “I’d never had a drink that good before,” Dodds recalls.
Number One Blue Jays Fan
Until I moved to the city, I thought blue jays were a rare bird. I’m not sure why I felt they weren’t around much, but I remember Mom’s excitement any time one flew through the backyard. When I was a kid, she’d sing me her modified version of “Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah” during bath time, scooping water to rinse the shampoo from my hair, trilling, Mister Blue Jay on your shoulder… and I’d feel him there, the blue jay, on my shoulder when she sang those words.
Walls of Art | Edify.
For readers under 30 who don’t know what that last sentence means, all you need to know is that a telephone exchange had an overwhelming number of wires that needed to be constantly “exchanged” into a wall of corresponding holes. For the owner of this sleek downtown loft, that now means really high walls. “And the great thing with these high walls is they’re perfect for art,” he says.
Fav Eats: Caley Suliak
When it comes to Cafe Amore Bistro’s Spicy Marsala Pasta, Caley Suliak — actress, comedian, writer, and one-third of comedy sketch group Girl Brain — isn’t just a fan, she’s a connoisseur. “You could say I’m maybe a little bit biased,” Suliak laughs, “but I worked at Cafe Amore Bistro on and off for like 10 years. And that sauce, is the most incredible sauce I’ve ever had.” While some people suffer from serving nightmares, Suliak’s dreams are much more delicious.

This Man Is An Island
In Geof Lilge’s world, everything always comes back to the kitchen. In his new showroom at River City Tile Company in the industrial northwest of Edmonton, the award-winning designer displays projects in a model kitchen that looks straight out of an issue of Architectural Digest.
Two Floors of Food
It’s a well-known truism of the restaurant business — in an industry fraught with delays, it’s dangerous to stick to a planned grand opening date. Jennifer Keith and Luke Butterworth know this all too well. They’re the founding partners of the new Epic Food Market, which opened at the corner of Gateway Boulevard and Whyte Avenue a couple of weeks back. Taking up the second and third floor of Ivan Beljan’s development that’s constructed using Sea-Cans, Epic takes the food court to the next level.
Fav Eats: Celeste Lampa
For Edmonton comedian Celeste Lampa, burgers were never really her go-to. But that all changed when she discovered the Double Flatty at Shiddy’s, a distillery/tasting room in the city that has quickly become her obsession. The food comes courtesy of Flat Boy Burgers. “I’ve only been there twice, but it’s that good,” Lampa says. “It’s really going to be a staple for me.
Banff Bites: Dinner at Magpie & Stump

Tourists and locals alike have come to Magpie & Stump for over 36 years to get “a little piece of Mexico in the mountains,” and every piece is authentic. We check inside to see all the cool, cozy and colourful decor, and consider going upstairs to El Patio.

Caylie’s love affair with music began at Suzuki Charter School, where the curriculum was a harmonious blend of academics and music.
Edmonton’s Closest Saltwater Lake
Lakes like Miquelon Lake are often called “prairie potholes” because they rely entirely on rainwater and snowmelt. Unlike their mainstream cousins that get their water from rivers or streams and drain it away just as easily, prairie potholes don’t have that luxury. Instead, they lose water only through evaporation, leaving behind a salty concoction of dissolved minerals. You won’t find orcas or dolphins swimming around, but Miquelon Lake is still buzzing with wildlife.

Consensus is building among top mock drafters that Franz Wagner will be selected by the Kings at #9
The 2021 NBA Draft is set to take place in just 8 days on Thursday, July 29th, 2021. As common sense would suggest, this is when the well-sourced mock drafters tend to get more accurate with their selections. Sam Vecenie, The Athletic's tremendous draft analyst and mock drafter, dropped a new mock on us Wednesday morning with a notable change at #9 to the Sacramento Kings – Michigan forward, Franz Wagner. Vecenie is the latest-of-many draft analysts to predict Wagner to Sacramento.
Eurohoops Turkey staff joins us to discuss Alperen Şengün's future in the NBA
Over the last month, Alperen Şengün has become a well-known name around NBA Draft circles. And rightfully so – this year’s top overseas prospect put up astounding numbers and earned the MVP of Turkey’s Basketball Super League at just 18 years old. We have already documented his sensational offensive skillset, as well his deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball.
2021 NBA Draft Profile: Kai Jones
NBA Position: Big General Info: 20-year-old sophomore, played for Texas. Born in Nassau, Bahamas, moved to Orlando, FL in high school. Measurables: 6’11, 221 lbs, 7’1.75 wingspan. 2016-17 Season Statistics: 8.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 0.6 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.9 BPG, 1.4 TPG (26 games played, 22.8 minutes a contest) – 58% FG, 38.2% 3P, 68.9% FT The idea of “safe players” versus “high-ceiling players” is a common debate when discussing NBA Draft prospects.
The Sacramento Kings are aggressively pursuing Damian Lillard, per report
The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor reported on Tuesday that the Sacramento Kings are among the team pursuing Damian Lillard in a trade. And not in the natural "phone calls were made" sense, but in the sense that the Kings are listed as one of the more aggressive teams in the chase. Few team executives expect a Dame deal to happen this offseason. But multiple front-office sources say the Heat, Kings, Knicks, Rockets, and Sixers have recently been the most aggressive suitors.
The Kings are succeeding in working out high-quality prospects
The Sacramento Kings have struggled for years to convince top draft prospects to visit Sacramento. Even in years when the Kings had higher picks, Sacramento was often left deciding whether or not they should draft a player without ever having met with the player or put them through a workout. It ended poorly at times, especially in the cases of Thomas Robinson and Ben McLemore where the Kings passed over players who'd had impressive workouts such as Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.
Omri Casspi is reportedly retiring from basketball
Omri Casspi is retiring from basketball, according to a report via Eurohoops.net. Casspi was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2009 with the 23rd overall pick, and spent his first two years in the NBA with Sacramento. After stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets, Casspi returned to the Kings in 2014 and stuck around for two and a half seasons. Casspi’s time with the Kings was underwhelming, all things considered, but Casspi was a fan favorite especially in his first two years.
2021 NBA Draft Profile: Alperen Şengün
We continue to see more and more players emerge in the NBA that break the mold of the typical “modern” big man. Post-ups are a rarity while guards and wings fill the primary offensive centerpiece role on 90% of rosters. The 2021 NBA MVP, Nikola Jokic, is the most obvious outlier with his elite vision paired with otherworldly creativeness and touch at 6’11”.
Sacramento Kings interested in Nerlens Noel, per report
The Sacramento Kings are interested in free agent center Nerlens Noel, according to Hoops Hype's Michael Scotto. Noel spent last season with the New York Knicks, where he averaged 5.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. Multiple teams have free agent center Nerlens Noel on their radar, including the Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors. The Knicks also remain interested in re-signing Noel. More on @hoopshype.
How can the Kings acquire Lonzo Ball?
On Tuesday morning, Shams Charania of The Athletic dropped a barrel full of interesting tidbits for Sacramento Kings fans. He mentioned the continued availability of All-Star Ben Simmons and up-and-coming point guard Collin Sexton, but it was the revelation that the New Orleans Pelicans would not be matching a large offer sheet to Lonzo Ball that should pique Monte McNair's interest.

Tyrese Haliburton shares insights and anecdotes on The Hoop Collective/The Lowe Post
On the most recent crossover podcast episode of The Hoop Collective and The Lowe Post, Brian Windhorst and Zach Lowe hosted a discussion with our beloved Tyrese Haliburton. They covered analysis of Game 3 of the NBA Finals, reflections of Haliburton's first NBA season, and Haliburton's experience with the USA Men's Select Team. It seems that every time Tyrese opens his mouth or merely makes a public appearance (i.e. repping retro Kings attire), we find something new to love about him.
What can the Kings get for Marvin Bagley?
Over the last couple of weeks, one fact has become abundantly clear in Sacramento: Marvin Bagley wants out.
2021 NBA Draft Profile: Ziaire Williams
